MUMBAI – Domestic stock indices settled marginally higher Thursday, after high volatility throughout the session. Analysts attributed the volatility in the market to the Nifty 50's movement in a narrow range of 23350 and 23450. Weak global cues, the upcoming decision of the Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee, and weekly expiry of derivatives of the Sensex also triggered volatility, analysts say.
The Nifty 50 settled 0.1% higher at 23416.55, up 10.95 points. The BSE Sensex closed at 74360.01, up 13.84 points. India VIX settled over 2% lower at 15.8850, showing easing of nervousness among investors.
The Union Cabinet Wednesday gave a green signal to a plan to lower the capital gains tax and withholding tax on government bonds to attract foreign investment and help protect its foreign exchange reserves, according to sources. The proposal comes as India navigates one of its worst energy crisis due to the war in West Asia.
Broader market indices fared better than their benchmark peers, closing 0.4-0.6% higher. Among sectoral indices, only the Nifty Infrastructure, Nifty IT, and Nifty Metal settled in the red. The Nifty Media and Nifty Consumer Durables were up 2.2?ch. The Nifty Metal logged the most losses, down nearly 1%.

In the Nifty 200 index, consumer durables stock Voltas gained the most, up 4.2%. Energy companies Adani Total Gas, Hitachi Energy India, and CG Power and Industrial Solutions also gained in the index, up around 4?ch.
In the Nifty 500 universe, Physicswallah gained nearly 16% to become the top performer. Shares of the company rose after the company said it was restructuring its INR 1.2-billion investment in fully-owned subsidiary FinZ Finance, following feedback from its partners to focus on its core operations. The company is reworking its lending strategy and has engaged multiple regulated third-party non-banking financial companies for student financing needs.
ICICI Bank clocked nearly 1% gains. The bank was the top pick of brokerage Motilal Oswal Financial Services in the banking sector, given its operating performance and good delivery across loan growth, margin, and asset quality.
Zee Entertainment Enterprises, Cemindia Projects, and Anant Raj were the other major gainers in the Nifty 500 index, up 7.6-10.5%. JBM Auto closed 3.5% higher after coming off highs. The stock gained after the company Wednesday said it was now the top player in India's electric bus segment with a market share of nearly 49% in May, up from 18% in April, based on data from VAHAN portfolio.
Shares of Jain Irrigation ended 8% higher after the company commissioned an around 20,000 tonnes per annum biochar facility in Maharashtra. Bluestone Jewellery and Lifestyle closed over 5% higher post its management saying it aims for sales of INR 120 billion by 2029-30 (Apr-Mar).
Among the Nifty 200 losers, National Aluminium Co. shed the most at over 5%. It was followed by Bharat Heavy Electricals with over 4% losses. Global brokerage UBS downgraded the stock's rating to "neutral" from "buy" while raising its target price by around 23% to INR 460.
NALCO and BHEL were also among the major laggards in the Nifty 500 index. Meesho ended as the top loser in the index, down nearly 6% and Zenzar Technologies fell 5.5%.
Rajesh Exports hit the 5% lower circuit after the Securities and Exchange Board of India issued an interim order against the company and its promoter, Rajesh Mehta. The order pertains to misrepresentation of the company's revenue between 2020–21 (Apr-Mar) and FY26.
