May electricity trade volume on Indian Energy up 19% YoY at 12.98 billion units

--IEX May electricity traded volume 12.98 bln units, up 18.6% on year 

 

NEW DELHI – The electricity trade volume on Indian Energy Exchange Ltd. in May increased to 12.98 billion units, up 18.6% on year, the company said in an exchange filing Wednesday. A total of 610,000 renewable energy certificates were traded during the month, down 65% on year, according to the filing.

 

India consumed 164.98 billion units of energy in May, up 11.5% on year, the company said, adding that the peak power demand rose to an all-time high of 270.82 gigawatt. Due to this significant increase in demand, the average market clearing price in the day-ahead market was INR 4.88 per unit, up 18.3% on year. The average real-time market clearing price was INR 4.16 per unit, up a little over 21% on year during the month. Overall, buy bids were up 77% on year while sell bids rose 30% in the day-ahead market, as per the filing.

 

The company said 4.42 billion units of electricity were traded in the day-ahead market on the exchange in May, up almost 25% on year. Volumes in the real-time electricity market rose nearly 16% on year to 5.53 billion units during the month. 

 

On the Indian Energy green market, 1.03 billion units were traded in May, up 13% on year. The weighted average price in the green day-ahead market during the month was INR 3.60 per unit, largely flat on year. In the day-ahead contingency and term-ahead market, which covers contingency, daily, weekly, and monthly contracts up to three months, 2 billion units were traded in May, up 16.1% on year.

 

For the March quarter, the company reported a net profit of INR 1.24 billion on revenues of INR 1.72 billion. Wednesday, shares of Indian Energy Exchange closed at INR 123.28 on the National Stock Exchange, down 1.6% from Tuesday.  End
