MUMBAI – Escalation in the West Asia war, which led crude oil prices climb to $98 a barrel, and a fall in Indian information technology stocks pulled down headline equity indices Wednesday. The indices closed marginally lower each, after coming off lows due to buying in bank and financial services stocks. The indices closed lower for the fifth time in the last six sessions.
"Rupee is not stabilised, IT index is down 5%, crude oil prices are rising, and FII (foreign institutional investor) selling are restricting the upside movement," Chandan Taparia, technical and derivatives research head at Motilal Oswal, said. The Nifty 50 settled 0.3% lower at 23405.60, down 77.95 points. The BSE Sensex closed 0.4% lower at 74346.17, down 303.67 points.
The US military's Central Command said its forces conducted "self-defence" strikes on Qeshm Island in Iran and "defeated multiple" Iranian missiles and drones, as civilian vessels and regional allies Kuwait and Bahrain came under attack, according to various news reports. Reacting to this, Brent crude oil August futures were up almost 3% at nearly $100 a barrel at 1534 IST.
In another development, Bloomberg reported that India plans to announce steps to attract more foreign investments by reducing taxes and removing caps on the ownership of some bonds as soon as this week. "The cabinet on Wednesday is expected to consider a significant cut in the taxes paid by global funds on the nation's bonds," the report said, citing people who asked not to be identified.
Barring the Nifty Smallcap 250, broader market indices also settled lower. They were down 0.1–0.6%. Sectoral indices showed a mixed performance, with the Nifty IT being the major drag, down 5.6%. However, the Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Bank, and Nifty Private Bank gained 0.7-1.7% and helped the benchmark peers come off lows.
Tata Consultancy Services was the biggest loser in the 50-stock index, down over 8%. It was also the key drag in both the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices. Other IT stocks, Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies, Infosys, and Wipro, closed 2.7–6.3% lower. The Nifty IT index pared its three-day gains, with all the constituents in the red.
In the Nifty 200 as well as the Nifty 500, IT stocks were the major losers. Persistent Systems, LTM, and Coforge were down over 6?ch.
Realty companies were also in the red, with the Nifty Realty being the second-most losing sectoral index. It was down 1.4%, with most of its constituents ending lower. Prestige Estates Projects was down nearly 4% and was the top loser in the pack. Lodha Developers, Oberoi Realty, and DLF were down 1.7–2.7%.
Fast-moving consumer goods and consumer durables stocks were also down. Hindustan Unilever and Nestle India were 0.3–0.8% lower. The Nifty FMCG and Nifty Consumer Durables indices closed around 1% lower each.
Index heavyweights ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank gained around 1?ch during the session. Gains in banking and financial services stocks helped the indices pare some initial loses.
State Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank, and Shriram Finance gained 0.1–1.4%. Indian Bank was the top performer in the Nifty PSU Bank index, up nearly 3%. Union Bank of India, Central Bank of India, and Canara Bank gained over 2?ch.
Vodafone Idea and NHPC gained the most in the Nifty 200 index. Shares of NHPC rose after the government decided to use the entire greenshoe option to sell an additional 3% stake in NHPC through an offer for sale.
IFCI, Ola Electric Mobility, RHI Magnesita India, and Cartrade Tech gained 9.3-12.3% in the Nifty 500 index. According to a CNBC-TV18 report, brokerage Kotak Institutional Equities upgraded Cartrade Tech to 'buy' from 'sell' and hiked its target price by nearly 28% to INR 2,300 from INR 1,800.
Shares of Concord Biotech closed 3% higher after the company received the US Food and Drug Administration's approval for Mycophenolate mofetil USP. The stock closed higher for the past three sessions.
