MUMBAI – After remaining in negative territory for half the session, headline equity indices rebounded significantly to close higher Tuesday. The indices bucked a four-day losing streak Tuesday on the expiry of the Nifty 50 derivatives contract. A nearly 2?ll in crude oil prices to $93 a barrel supported the market after Iran's suspension of talks with the US over Israel's expanding military attack in Lebanon led the market to open lower.

The Nifty 50 closed 0.4% higher at 23483.55, up 100.95 points. The BSE Sensex ended 0.5% higher at 74649.84, up 382.50 points. However, the 50-stock index was still over 510 points short of 24000 points. More than half the Nifty 50 stocks ended the session higher.

"Nifty has support in the range of 23300-23100," Ruchit Jain, head of technical research at Motilal Oswal, said. "As the index approached this support zone, buying interest is seen there."

Broader market indices also performed similar to their benchmark peers, closing 0.1–0.5% higher. However, sectoral indices were mixed in the session. Volatility index India VIX indicated showed easing in investor nervousness, closing over 7% lower at 15.3550.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty IT was the top gainer. The sectoral index ended the session over 4% higher, with all its members in the green. Meanwhile, the Nifty Pharma and Nifty Healthcare were the major losers.

Information technology majors Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, and Wipro were in the top order of the Nifty 50 index gainers. The stocks settled 1.7-6.5% higher. The Nifty IT index continued to rise for the third consecutive session Tuesday.

Fast-moving consumer goods and consumer durables stocks also gained in the session. Shares of ITC and Titan Co. ended over 1% higher each. The Nifty Consumer Durables and Nifty FMCG were the major gainers among sectoral indices. Both the indices were up around 1?ch.

In the Nifty 200, too, IT stocks gained the most. Coforge, LTM, and Mphasis were 3.3–4.0% higher. NMDC, up over 3%, was also one of the top gainers in the Nifty 200. The stock rose after brokerages saw higher volumes driving earnings for the steelmaker after it posted healthy earnings for the March quarter.

In the Nifty 500 index, Newgen Software Technologies turned out to be the highest gainer, up over 17%. Concord Biotech, JM Financial, and ACME Solar Holdings gained 8.8–9.9% in the index.

Meanwhile, pharmaceutical and healthcare stocks were among the major drags in the Nifty 50 index. Dr. Reddy's Laboratories and Cipla shed around 1?ch. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries closed 0.4% lower. A fall of 1% in index heavyweight ICICI Bank limited the gains.

NHPC ended as the key laggard in the Nifty 200 index. Shares of the company settled over 6% lower. The stock fell after the government Monday said it would sell up to 6% stake in the company through an offer for sale. It closed lower for the third consecutive session. Hitachi Energy India and NTPC were the other losers in the index, down around 3?ch.

Wockhardt, NHPC, and Force Motors were the losers in the Nifty 500 index. Shares of Force Motors plunged nearly 6?ter the company's overall sales in May fell over 15% on year. The stock closed lower for the third straight session. Wockhardt, the key laggard in the Nifty 500, shed nearly 9% in the session. The stock capped a five-session rally Tuesday.
