NEW DELHI –  Hero MotoCorp Ltd. Monday said it sold 570,068 two-wheelers in May, up 12% year-on-year compared to 507,701 units sold in the same month a year ago. This was sharply slower than the 85% growth in volumes reported in April, which came on a low base, as the company had shut production for a few days in the year-ago month for maintenance work.

The company's domestic sales grew nearly 10% year-on-year to 536,784 units in May and exports nearly doubled to 33,284 units. It sold 503,763 motorcycles in May, up from 475,164 units a year ago, and 66,305 scooters, up from 32,537 units a year ago.

Growth in the domestic motorcycle and scooter business was led by strong sales of the Deluxe 125cc, premium motorcycles and scooters, each registering double-digit growth, the company said in an exchange filing.

VAHAN registrations for the company's electric scooter VIDA rose 166% year-on-year in May. "Strategically positioned to capture a new demographic of young riders, the company expanded its EV (electric vehicle) market reach with the commencement of the DIRT.E K3 retail operations in select markets, further expanding its electric mobility product portfolio and accessibility," the company said.

Hero MotoCorp's total sales during Apr-May rose nearly 40% on year to 1.14 million units from 813,107 units a year ago, driven by strong growth in both domestic and overseas markets. Domestic sales during the first two months of the year increased to 1.07 million units from 777,521 units, while exports nearly doubled to 66,937 units. It sold just over 1 million motorcycles during this period, up 32% on year, and more than doubled its scooter sales to 130,600 units.

For the March quarter, the company had reported a net profit of INR 14.01 billion on revenues of INR 127.97 billion. At 0932 IST, its shares traded at INR 4,771.80 on the National Stock Exchange, down 1.0% from the previous close.  End
