KOLKATA – Coal India Ltd. Monday said 33% of the coal it offered in the e-auctions in May was booked by the bidders, earning a premium of 36% from the auctions. Coal India sells coal at pre-determined, notified prices to consumers under supply agreements. However, the company also offers coal to consumers through auctions, at prices 20?ove the notified prices.
Bidding for coal by buyers usually starts at these elevated prices and then increases or decreases based on coal supply and demand. This extra income, which Coal India earns by selling coal above the notified prices, is called a premium.
In May, Coal India offered a total of 25.74 million tonnes of coal, of which 8.42 million tonnes were booked by the buyers.
During Apr-May, Coal India offered 56.29 million tonnes of coal through e-auctions, of which 20.19 million tonnes, or 36% of the total offered, were booked by consumers. Coal India earned a 45% premium over the notified prices by selling coal under the hammer during Apr-May, the company said in a notice to the bourses.
For the March quarter, Coal India reported a consolidated net profit of INR 108.39 billion on revenue of INR 464.90 billion. Monday, shares of the company closed 3.2% higher at INR 472.60 on the National Stock Exchange. End
