MUMBAI – Bears continued to rule in the domestic equity market for the fourth straight day of trade, as headline stock indices closed sharply lower Monday. The ongoing global uncertainty led market sentiment to remain negative, according to analysts.

The Nifty 50 settled 0.7% lower at 23382.60, down 165.15 points. The BSE Sensex also ended 0.7% lower at 74267.34, down 508.40 points. The 50-stock index closed below the 24000 level for the fourth straight day. Only 10 constituents of the Nifty 50 ended in positive territory, of which five were information technology stocks.

"After a strong start that pushed NIFTY (50) near 24100 on hopes of easing oil prices and a potential geopolitical breakthrough, sentiment turned cautious as crude prices rebounded and foreign investors continued to reduce exposure," said Jigar Patel, senior manager at Anand Rathi Shares and Stock Brokers.

The broader market was also in line with benchmark indices. All small-cap indices closed 0.8–0.9% lower, while all mid-cap indices settled over 1% lower each. India VIX showed a rise in investor nervousness, with the volatility index almost 2% higher at 16.4875.

Barring the Nifty IT, Nifty Media, and Nifty Metal, sectoral indices closed lower for the session. The Nifty FMCG and Nifty PSU Bank were the major drags, both down around 2%. Meanwhile, the Nifty IT index closed as the top gaining sectoral index, up almost 3%.

Fast-moving consumer goods major Hindustan Unilever fared the worst on the Nifty 50 index. The stock, which closed over 3% lower, extended its losses for the third straight session. Its peer Tata Consumer Products was also down 3%.

In contrast, Tech Mahindra and Infosys were the top two gainers in the 50-stock index. The stocks were up around 4% higher each. Tata Consultancy Services, HCL Technologies, and Wipro were the other IT companies to trade higher, up 1.0-1.7%.

While all stocks in the Nifty IT index traded higher during the session, all constituents of the Nifty PSU Bank index settled lower. Union Bank of India was the major drag among the Nifty PSU Bank stocks, down 3%.

Shriram Finance was the second-biggest loser in the Nifty 50 index, down almost 3%. The stock closed lower for the second session. Bajaj Finance, Jio Financial Services, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and HDFC Life Insurance Co. were down 1.3-2.1%.

Automobile stocks also clocked significant losses in the 50-stock index after most companies released their monthly sales data Monday. The Nifty Auto was down nearly 2% with only two of its constituents trading with gains. Ashok Leyland was the biggest loser in the sectoral index and was down nearly 4%. In the Nifty 50, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, and Maruti Suzuki India were down 1.5-2.5%.

In the Nifty 200 universe, GE Vernova T&D India was the biggest loser, down over 8%. Jaiprakash Power Ventures, which settled over 13% lower, was the major drag in the Nifty 500 index.

RHI Magnesita fell over 10% and was also among the major losers in the Nifty 500 index. The stock fell after the company posted a loss for the March quarter, against a profit in the year-ago period.

Inox Wind settled over 9% lower in the Nifty 500 index. The company Friday posted a double-digit on-year fall in its consolidated net profit for the March quarter. Both its bottom line and the top line were sharply below the Street's view.

InterGlobe Aviation came off its early highs and closed 1.1% higher. Shares of the company rose despite it reporting a net loss for the March quarter Friday.

The Nifty 200 gainers were also led mostly by IT companies. Persistent Systems, LTM, Coforge, Oracle Financial Services Software, and Mphasis were the other IT stocks in the Nifty 200 index, which closed higher. They were 1.7–4.0% higher at close.

"Indian IT stocks advanced sharply as the global boom in artificial intelligence (AI) spending continued to drive demand for technology services," said Sundar Kewat, technical and derivatives analyst at Ashika Institutional Equity Research. "Strong expectations of higher digital transformation and AI-related investments boosted sentiment across the IT sector, leading to broad-based gains in technology stocks."

PTC Industries led the Nifty 500 index with over 14% gains. The stock surged after the company's consolidated bottom line for the Jan-Mar quarter more than doubled on year. Its top line jumped 85% on year in the quarter. PTC Industries rose for the fifth time in the last six sessions.

Wockhardt and NMDC were the other major gainers in the Nifty 500 and were 5-6% higher. Wockhardt gained after the company Saturday received the US Food and Drug Administration's approval for its antibiotic drug Zaynich.
