KOLKATA - Ashok Leyland Ltd. Monday reported a 4% on-year fall in its total vehicle sales during May at 14,923 units. Although total sales of light commercial vehicles increased 15% on year to 5,957 units, medium and heavy commercial truck sales fell 4% on year to 7,331 units and medium and heavy commercial bus sales tanked 39% on year to 1,635 units. This pulled down the overall sales growth during the month.
In India, total vehicle sales declined 3% on year to 14,148 units in May. Sales of medium and heavy commercial trucks fell 5% on year to 7,065 units and sales of light commercial buses dipped sharply by 35% on year to 1,255 units. However, sales of light commercial vehicles rose 13% on year to 5,828 units, which arrested the overall decline in domestic sales volume in May.
Including exports, total sales of medium and commercial trucks declined 13% on year to 8,966 units in May.
In Apr-May, Ashok Leyland's total vehicle sales, including exports, increased 2% on year to 29,569 units. These include sales of 17,268 medium and heavy commercial vehicles, down 5% on year, mainly on account of lower sales of buses, and 12,301 light commercial vehicles, up 15% on year. In India, the company sold a total of 28,390 commercial vehicles during Apr-May, up 5% on year.
In the March quarter, the Chennai-headquartered company reported a net profit of INR 14.05 billion, up 13% on year, on revenues of INR 141.60 billion, up around 19% on year. At 1458 IST, shares of the company were down 3.5% at INR 150.0 on the National Stock Exchange. End
