MUMBAI – Stocks of fast-moving consumer goods companies are expected to fall further next week, mirroring the overall negative sentiment in the market. The Nifty FMCG index is likely to extend its fall for the fourth week, according to analysts.

"Macro fundamentals remain stable, but consumer confidence softens, indicating near-term caution," Nielsen Consumer said in a report. The research firm expects volatility in demand to rise in the short term, given moderation in the index of industrial production, rising inflation, unemployment stable at 5%, and weak growth in income, especially in rural areas.

Nielsen Consumer expects the value growth of FMCG companies to remain resilient on the back of slower price growth, along with a shift towards larger pack sizes despite moderated volumes, it said. Demand in urban areas continues to drive growth in the sector, while rural consumption has remained subdued, largely because of the high base of last year, it added.

Friday, the Nifty FMCG index closed 1.5% lower at 49383.35 points. On week the sectoral index was down 1.7%, sharply lower than the benchmark Nifty 50 and Nifty 200 indices, which closed 0.7% and 0.1% lower, respectively. The Nifty FMCG index is expected to face resistance at 50732.90 points and find support at 48408.70 points, according to technical analysts.

United Breweries was the top performer in the Nifty FMCG index, rising 0.4% this week. Just two companies--Godrej Consumer Products and United Breweries--closed higher on week. ITC was the worst performer, down 5% on week. Colgate-Palmolive (India), Britannia Industries, Hindustan Unilever, Varun Beverages, and Dabur India fell around 2-5% over the week.

Earlier in the week, Procter and Gamble Hygiene and Health Care reported a near 2% fall in its net profit for the March quarter to INR 1.53 billion. The FMCG company reported a revenue from operations of INR 9.41 billion, down a little over 5% on year.

Another FMCG major, Bata India's net profit for the quarter nosedived over 95% on year to INR 20.69 million. Its revenue from operations for the quarter rose a little over 5% to INR 8.28 billion. Gillette India reported a net profit of INR 1.93 billion for the March quarter on a revenue of INR 7.92 billion.
