MUMBAI – Analysts expect pharmaceutical companies to see buying interest as the sector is shielded from the risk of inflationary pressures arising from the West Asia war hitting overall demand. While domestic-facing companies are expected to do well in the coming quarters, robust launch pipeline in the US is also seen aiding companies perform better, analysts said. Analysts also said the companies have performed significantly well in the March quarter. Technical analysts expect the Nifty Pharma index to buy on dips.

Analysts also said the pharmaceutical sector is a defensive bet amid the ongoing volatility in the market induced by the war. Since the West Asia war began, there has been significant inflows into the stocks in this sector, as indicated by the 6% rise in the Nifty Pharma against around a 7% fall in the Nifty 50. Sharp depreciation in rupee, alongside less risks from West Asia war to the small presence in the region makes the sector a safe bet, said Maitri Sheth, research analyst at Choice Institutional Equities. In the near term, this factor is to sustain, the analyst added.

For the week, shares of six companies that are part of the Nifty Pharma index closed higher. Wockhardt, Zydus Lifesciences, and Alkem Laboratories were the biggest gainers for the week. Ajanta Pharma and Ipca Laboratories were the underperformers. The Nifty Pharma Friday closed at 24345.80 points, down 370.20 points or 1.5%. For the next week, the index is expected to find support at 23750 points and face resistance at 25000 points, said Vipin Kumaar, assistant vice president - technical and fundamental research - Globe Capital Market. The bias is positive and the traders are expected to buy on dips, he added.
