MUMBAI – Headline equity indices ended Wednesday's session in the red, with the Nifty 50 index settling largely flat, after a highly volatile session. The indices settled lower for the second session due to a lack of fresh triggers from the West Asia war front. Crude oil prices oscillated between $95 a barrel and $99 a barrel during the session. Though the Nifty 50 index closed marginally lower, most of its constituents ended in the green. The Indian equity market will be closed on Thursday for the Bakri Id holiday.

The Nifty 50 settled at 23907.15, down 6.55 points or 0.03%. The BSE Sensex ended at 75867.80, down 141.90 points or 0.2%. The Nifty 50 index closed below the 24000 level for the second session after it rose above the psychologically crucial level on Monday.

All the broader market indices outperformed their benchmark peers. Small-cap indices closed 0.2–0.6% higher, while mid-cap indices closed 0.1–0.4% higher each. India VIX fell, indicating lower investor nervousness, settling over 7% lower at 14.9825.

Sectoral indices showed a mixed performance Wednesday, with most of them closing in the green. Banking and financial services indices were the biggest drags. The Nifty Media index gained the most, ending3.1% higher.

Index heavyweight HDFC Bank ended 2.6% lower. Shares of the bank remained in negative territory throughout the session after a media report said the bank disguised the payment of INR 450 million in interest to Maharashtra State Road Development Corp. as marketing expenditure. According to a CNBC-TV18 report, the Reserve Bank of India may look into the quantum of higher interest rates.

HDFC Life Insurance Co., SBI Life Insurance Co., and ICICI Bank settled 0.5–1.5% lower. The Nifty Financial Services, Nifty Private Bank, and the Nifty Bank were the top three losers among the sectoral indices, down 0.4-0.7%.

Metal companies were major gainers, with Hindalco Industries ending as the best performer among the 50 stocks. The stock settled 4.2% higher. Tata Steel was up 2%. Energy companies Power Grid Corp. of India and NTPC also gained 2.2-2.6%.

Oil and Natural Gas Corp. was the main drag among the Nifty 50 constituents. The stock closed 4.7% lower after the company's net profit and sales for the March quarter missed analysts' expectations. It also ended as the biggest drag on the Nifty 200 index. Select information technology stocks Wipro, Infosys, and Tech Mahindra closed 0.2-1.1% lower.

Techno Electric & Engineering Co. shed the most in the Nifty 500 index, ending 10.7% lower Wednesday. Shares of the company fell after its consolidated net profit for the March quarter declined 15% on-year.

Shares of Coal India ended 1.1% higher after remaining in the negative territory for most of the session. Shares of the company had fallen earlier after the government decided to sell a 2% stake through an offer for sale.

The Nifty Media was the top-gaining sectoral index, with most of its constituents in the green. Within the index, Zee Entertainment Enterprises gained the most, ending 10.5% higher. Shares of the company rose after it announced plans to launch four sports channels. Saregama India gained 5.4% after closing lower in the previous four sessions, shedding nearly 3% during this period.

Jaiprakash Power Ventures ended 19.6% higher and was the top performer in the Nifty 500 index. The stock has gained for the fifth straight session, rising almost 25% during the period.

Siemens Energy India stock ended as one of the top gainers in the Nifty 200 index, closing 8.8% higher. The stock rose despite the company's bottom line missing the Street's view in the March quarter.

Shares of AIA Engineering settled 6.9% higher after the company's consolidated net profit and sales for the March quarter surpassed Street estimates.
