End dn as Asian mkts fall; oil up on US strike on Iran

MUMBAI – After a highly volatile session, the headline stock indices ended lower Tuesday tracking losses in the Asian markets. The self-defence strikes by US forces in Southern Iran pushed crude oil prices up 3% to hover again near the $100 a barrel mark. The Nifty 50 index closed below 24000 level again, which had bucked a 10-session trend on Monday when it closed above the psychologically crucial level. Only 18 Nifty 50 constituents ended higher for the session.
Iranian supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei said Gulf powers will no longer be a shield for US bases and the US will no longer have a safe haven in the region, The Guardian reported quoting Reuters. The US conducted strikes on Iran even as US President Donald Trump continued to urge for a peace deal in the region, saying on Monday that the talks were "proceeding nicely", according to the CNBC report.
Tuesday, the Nifty 50 settled 0.5% lower at 23913.70, down 118 points. The BSE Sensex ended 0.6% lower at 76009.70, down 479.26 points. Both the indices bucked the gains for two straight days. The Nifty 50's Tuesday closing level was over 86 points short of the 24000 points level.
All the broader market indices, however, ended the session higher Tuesday. Nifty midcap indices ended 0.5% higher each and smallcap indices ended 0.2–0.4% higher.
Most sectoral indices ended the session lower, with the Nifty Consumer Durables dragging the most. The sectoral index was down over 1%. The Nifty Metal, Nifty Energy, Nifty FMCG, and the Nifty Auto were the only gainers among sectoral indices.
Among individual stocks, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise was the major loser and settled nearly 2% lower. Index heavyweights HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank shed around 1?ch. HDFC was down after two straight sessions of gains, whereas ICICI was down after gaining for the previous three straight sessions. Information technology stocks Wipro and Tata Consultancy Services were down around 1.5?ch.
Container Corp. of India was the lowest gainer in the Nifty 200 index. It shed over 7?ter the company's March quarter net profit and sales missed the Street's view. Shares of the company remained in the negative territory throughout Tuesday's session. It was among the major losers in the Nifty 500 index as well.
Rail Vikas Nigam logged a nearly 5% loss in the Nifty 200 index. The company detailed its March quarter earnings post-market hours Monday and its net profit fell the most in seven straight quarters. The stock fell after gaining for the previous three sessions.
Techno Electric & Engineering Co. dragged down the Nifty 500 index the most. The stock, which closed nearly 13% lower, after it reported March quarter results. The company's consolidated net profit for the quarter was down in double digits as expenses weighed on its bottom line. The stock bucked a five-day rally Tuesday. It gained nearly 16% during this period.
Among the 18 Nifty 50 constituents that ended in the positive territory, Adani Enterprises gained the most and settled over 4% higher. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Tech Mahindra, and Nestle India were the other major gainers in the 50-stock index. The stocks ended 1.1–3.3% higher.
Oil and Natural Gas Corp. gained around 1% higher ahead of its March quarter results announcement. The stock closed higher after three straight sessions. The oil exploration and production company is expected to post a 35% on-year rise in its net profit and a 4% on-year rise in its top line for the quarter.
Metal companies Hindalco Industries, JSW Steel, and Tata Steel were also higher in the 50-stock index. These stocks gained 0.1–0.4%. The Nifty Metal index was the highest gaining sectoral index, which ended 1.1% higher.
Adani Total Gas was the highest gainer in both the Nifty 200 as well as Nifty 500 indices. The stock ended over 8% higher. Shares of Exide Industries closed nearly 6% higher in the Nifty 200 index and was higher for the second straight session.
In the Nifty 500 index, Cemindia Projects ended over 7% higher. Afcons Infrastructure, Tejas Networks, and Gujarat Mineral Development Corp. were down 5.7-7.2% higher.
