MUMBAI – Bears ruled over the bulls after two straight sessions, as headline equity indices closed lower Friday. The market saw a highly volatile session amid escalating Brent crude oil prices and hopes of a resolution to the US-Iran conflict. The indices also tracked a fall in their Asian peers. The retail fuel price hike by Indian Oil Corp. also had an impact on the market. Index heavyweight Reliance Industries prevented the Nifty 50 from ending higher for a third straight session, as the stock fell almost 2% in the session.
"We did discuss Iran. We feel very similar about [how] we want it to end," The Guardian quoted US President Donald Trump as saying. "We don't want them to have a nuclear weapon. We want the strait open," he said. Trump added that his visit to China had been "incredible" and "I think a lot of good has come of it." "We've made some fantastic trade deals for both countries," he said.
The Nifty 50 closed 0.2% lower at 23643.50, down 46.10 points. The BSE Sensex also settled 0.2% lower at 75237.99, down 160.73 points." The benchmark Nifty index opened gap-up and briefly breached the resistance level of 23800 (spot) during day trade, Vipin Kumar, derivatives and technical analyst at Globe Capital Market, said. "However, it failed to hold above that level and settled slightly lower at 23660 (spot)," he said. At 1538 IST, the July futures contract of Brent crude was over 3% higher at $109.32 a barrel.
All broader market indices mirrored the losses in the benchmark indices, with the midcap indices snapping a two-day rise. Midcap indices ended the session 0.4–0.5% lower and smallcap indices closed 0.4-0.6% lower. Investors again showed some nervousness, as the India VIX settled nearly 1% higher at 18.7900.
Most sectoral indices ended in negative territory, with the Nifty Metal index being the worst hit, down nearly 2%. The Nifty Oil & Gas also fell nearly 2% following the news of fuel price hikes. The index settled lower after two straight sessions of gains.
Hindalco Industries was the worst hit Nifty 50 stock, ending over 3% lower. Tata Steel was also among the key laggards, down almost 2%. The stock fell ahead of its March quarter results later in the day. The company's consolidated net profit for Jan-Mar is expected to rise 82% on year.
Indian Oil Corp., Bharat Petroleum Corp., and Hindustan Petroleum Corp. ended the session lower, down 3-4%. Indian Oil Corp. hiked petrol and diesel prices by INR 3 per litre in New Delhi amid the energy crisis due to the West Asia war. The price of petrol saw a hike of INR 3 per litre to INR 97.77 per litre. Diesel prices were hiked to INR 90.67 per litre from INR 87.67 per litre earlier, as per the data from IOC.
Housing & Urban Development Corp. and Muthoot Finance were the key drags in both the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices. HUDCO ended over 7% lower, while Muthoot closed with over 6% losses. Muthoot plunged despite a more than twofold increase in bottom line for the March quarter.
Shares of Data Patterns (India) ended over 3% lower after the company's revenue for the March quarter missed the Street's estimate and fell on year. Its revenue for the March quarter fell 13% on year. The stock was down for the second session.
Contrary to their performance on Thursday, information technology companies gained momentum and became the largest contributors to the Nifty 50 index. Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Wipro, and Tata Consultancy Services ended 0.8-2% higher. Barring Mphasis, all constituents of the Nifty IT index ended higher for the session. The sectoral index ended as the second-biggest gainer among sectoral indices, up over 1%. The Nifty Media, Nifty FMCG, Nifty Pharma, Nifty Healthcare, and the Nifty Auto were the other sectoral indices ended with gains.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles was the top gainer in the 50-stock index, up over 5%. The stock rose after the company posted a consolidated net profit for the March quarter against a loss in the previous quarter. Its net profit growth was driven by the recovery in its UK subsidiary JLR, Jaguar-Land Rover. The stock ended as the top gainer in the Nifty 200 as well.
Power Grid Corp. of India settled over 1% higher ahead of its March quarter results. The company is expected to report a net profit of over INR 44 billion for the March quarter, up over 2% on year. Its top line for the quarter is seen at over INR 128 billion, which would mean a growth of 16.63% on year.
Jaiprakash Power Ventures and Kirloskar Oil Engines were the biggest gainers in the Nifty 500 index, closing around 9% higher each. Kirloskar Oil Thursday said it would spend INR 14 billion on its plant in Kagal, Kolhapur, for increasing its capacity to around 20,000 engines per year within two years.
Stocks of Adani Group companies showed a mixed performance following reports suggesting that US authorities are moving to drop fraud charges against Chairman Gautam Adani and resolve the criminal lawsuit brought by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Adani Enterprises and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone ended 0.1–1.2% higher. However, Adani Energy Solutions, Adani Green Energy, and Adani Power settled with 1.2-2.5% losses.
