MUMBAI – Despatches of automobiles in India and overseas in April jumped 30% on year to 2.94 million units as wholesale sales increased at a healthy rate for all segments, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed Thursday. However, demand in April moderated from March as despatches fell a percent on month. While demand for automobiles continues to remain healthy, the lobby body flagged concerns around high commodity prices because of the war in West Asia.

Domestic automobile despatches grew 28% on year but fell a sharp 5% on month to 2.32 million units in April. Exports fared much better in April as companies shipped out 628,128 units, up 38% on year and 15% on month.

The domestic wholesale sales of two-wheelers, by far the biggest segment of automobiles sold in India, grew 28% on year to 1.87 million units while their exports grew even faster to 509,199 units up 38% on year.

Despatches of scooters within India grew 26% on year to 691,993 units and that of motorcycles grew 31% to 1.14 million units. Production of two-wheelers kept pace with demand as companies manufactured 2.37 million two-wheelers in April, up 28% on year.

The domestic wholesale sales of passenger vehicles in April saw a near 25% year-on-year increase to 378,312 units while exports grew 13% to 67,308 units. Demand for passenger cars and utility vehicles remained robust in India and overseas markets. However, companies manufactured more utility vehicles and at a much faster rate in comparison with passenger cars last month. Overall passenger vehicle output grew almost 13% on year to 439,259 units.

Despatches of three-wheelers grew much faster in April compared with passenger vehicles and two-wheelers. Companies sold 65,668 three-wheelers to dealerships in India, up 33% and exported 50,655 units, up 84%. While sales of electric rickshaws faltered in India, demand for passenger carriers and goods carriers remained healthy. Automakers manufactured 108,461 three-wheelers in April, up 42% on year.
