MUMBAI – Oil India Ltd.'s net profit rose in the March quarter, defying analysts' expectations of a decline. After declining for five consecutive quarters, the state-owned oil explorer's bottom line rose year-on-year due to higher crude oil production and improved crude price realisation in the reporting quarter. The company's revenue was broadly in line with Street estimates.
Oil India's bottom line rose 12% on-year to INR 17.90 billion in the March quarter. Analysts had projected net profit at INR 12.77 billion. The company's revenue from operations rose 8% on year to INR 59.61 billion, largely in line with the Street estimate of INR 59.84 billion. The company's total income rose nearly 15% on year to INR 71.00 billion. A significant portion of the growth came from a nearly 72% increase in 'other income' to INR 11.39 billion.
The company's net profit growth was capped by a sharp rise in total expenses to INR 50.43 billion, up over 21% on year in the March quarter. Much of the increae in expenses was driven by costs classified under 'other statutory levies' and 'other expenses', which rose over 13% and nearly 21% on year to INR 15.61 billion and INR 10.62 billion, respectively. Contract costs rose to INR 9.13 billion, up almost 50% on year.
Oil India's revenue from its crude oil segment was INR 44.07 billion for the reporting quarter, up slightly more than 13% on-year. The crude oil segment accounted for 74% of the company's revenues. Other segments, however, fared poorly, with natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, renewable energy, and pipeline transportation segments reporting slightly lower or unchanged revenues compared to the year-ago quarter. The company's operating margin contracted to 20.19% from 28.12% in the year-ago quarter.
Oil India said the rise in its bottom line was due to a 6% increase in crude oil production and a 5% increase in crude price realisation. Crude price realisation increased to $77.89 per barrel from $74.46 per barrel in the year-ago quarter. Oil India produced 891,000 tonnes of crude oil from its mature and old oilfields in the March quarter, up from 844,000 tonnes in the year-ago quarter. Its daily production was 10,566 tonnes of crude oil, the highest in the last decade, according to a press release from Oil India.
The oil explorer drilled 74 wells and completed 307 workover jobs during 2025-26 (Apr-Mar). "Driven by an aggressive drilling and workover campaign, the company achieved a reserve replacement ratio exceeding 1 during the year," the release said. A reserve replacement ratio above 1 implies an increase in crude oil held in reserve.
The company has decided to pay a final dividend of INR 1 to its shareholders for FY26. The company said its subsidiary OIL Green Energy Ltd. has entered into a joint venture agreement with Hindustan Waste Treatment Pvt. Ltd. The joint venture will serve as an execution vehicle for the development, implementation, and operation of compressed biogas projects, the company said.
For FY26, the company's net profit fell by over 27% to INR 44.55 billion, and its revenue declined 3% to INR 213.46 billion. On Wednesday, the company's shares ended at INR 507.10 on the National Stock Exchange, up 3.3% from the previous close. The company declared its March quarter results after market hours. End
