Water level in key reservoirs at 66.83 bcm as of Thursday, 36.4% of capacity

MUMBAI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs of the country was at 66.83 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, accounting for 36.4% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level was up 14.1% from a year ago and 24.8% above the average storage over the past 10 years, the data showed.

 

In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 8.35 billion cubic metres, which is 42.1% of the total live storage capacity. A year ago, the water level was 23.7% of the capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

 

In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 7.31 billion cubic metres, accounting for 33.6% of the storage capacity, against nearly 28% a year ago. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.

 

The water level in the western region was 16.14 billion cubic metres, accounting for 42.36% of the storage capacity, as against about nearly 35% a year ago. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.

 

In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 20.199 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, 41.57% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 38.08% a year ago. The water level in the southern region was 14.83 billion cubic metres, 26.8% of the storage capacity, compared with nearly 29% a year ago. 

 

India received average rainfall of 21.0 millimetres in the week ended Wednesday, 79% above the normal of 11.7 millimetres for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
