MUMBAI – After a sharp decline in the shares of State Bank of India, the country's largest lender, on Friday due to pressure on margins, stocks of all public sector banks will remain in focus next week, analysts said. SBI's shares fell nearly 7% on Friday after the lender reported its earnings for the March quarter.
The bank's margins took a hit in the March quarter, with the domestic net interest margin moderating to 2.93% from 3.11% in the December quarter. The domestic NIM was 3.14% a year ago.
On the macro front, analysts said the developments in West Asia will remain in focus, along with inflation data. "Looking ahead, markets will closely monitor India and US inflation data, along with domestic credit growth trends, as these will influence RBI rate expectations and corporate margin outlook. While stable crude prices and rupee recovery offer near-term support, any renewed escalation in West Asia remains a key risk, particularly for commodity-sensitive sector," Vinod Nair, head of research, Geojit Investments Ltd., said in a note.
This week, the Nifty Bank settled at 55310.55 points, up 0.80% on week. In comparison, the benchmark Nifty 50 rose 0.70% in the week.
In its technical view, Bajaj Broking said, "Bank Nifty continue to consolidate in the range of 54,000-56,500 in the last 10 sessions. We expect the index to extend the same in the coming sessions. Bank Nifty last two weeks' highs are almost identical around 56,475. Going ahead, only a move above the same will infuse further momentum towards 57,500 levels in the coming weeks. Index has key support around 54,000-54,500 levels being the confluence of the recent low and 38.2% retracement of the last 3 weeks pullback."
