MUMBAI – After a tug-of-war between the bulls and the bears in the equity market, the Nifty 50 index ended flat Thursday while the BSE Sensex ended marginally lower. Though market participants remained optimistic about a US-Iran peace deal, uncertainties around the prospect induced volatility in the market for most of the session. The market ended in the red despite crude oil prices being below $100 a barrel. The Nifty 50 constituents showed a mixed performance, with more than half the stocks in the index ending in negative territory. All the other Asian benchmark equity indices closed higher with significant gains.
The Nifty 50 settled at 24326.65 points, down just over 4 points from Wednesday's close. The BSE Sensex closed 0.2% lower at 77844.52, down 114 points. At 1444 IST, the July Brent Crude futures contract was down 2% from Wednesday at $99.15 per barrel. The contract was down for the third session running.
US President Donald Trump said he had "very good talks" with Iran and added, "It's very possible we'll make a deal." Operation Epic Fury "will be at an end" if Iran "agrees to give what has been agreed to, which is, perhaps, a big assumption," Trump posted on social media Wednesday. However, he also said Iran will be bombed "at a much higher level" if it does not agree to a peace deal. Iran continues to review a 14-point US proposal to end the war and is likely to give a response to Pakistani mediators later in the day, Al Jazeera reported. In another development, Israel bombed Beirut in an expansion of its attacks on Lebanon.
The broader market indices performed way better than their benchmark peers. All the mid-cap indices ended at least 1% higher and the small-cap indices around 1% higher. All the three mid-cap indices hit their respective all-time highs during the day. Sectoral indices also outshone the headline indices, with most of them ended in positive territory with considerable gains. The India Volatility Index settled at 16.6200, down 0.3%.
Information technology stocks were the major laggards in the Nifty 50. Tata Consultancy Services, Tech Mahindra, and Wipro were down around 1?ch. Fast-moving consumer goods stocks also pulled the index down. Hindustan Unilever, which ended 2% lower, was the worst hit Nifty 50 stock. ITC fell 1%. Nestle India was also down nearly 1?ter having closed higher for the previous two sessions.
In the Nifty 200 as well as Nifty 500 indices, Godrej Consumer Products was the worst performer. The FMCG stock ended over 5% down after the company's earnings for the March quarter were not up to the Street's expectations. Godrej Consumer reported a consolidated net profit of INR 4.52 billion, up 10% on year. This was well below the Street's estimate of INR 5.70 billion. The company's consolidated revenue rose over 11% on year to INR 39 billion, largely in line with the Street's estimate.
KEI Industries ended nearly 1% down. The income tax department's investigation wing conducted searches at a total of 10 locations connected to the company in Delhi, NDTV Profit reported. Shares of KPIT Technologies ended over 3% lower after the company's bottom line for the March quarter missed the Street's expectation. The company's adjusted bottom line was at INR 1.63 billion, down 16% sequentially.
Shares of Coal India ended nearly 1% lower on media reports that the government is likely to divest 3-4% stake worth INR 100 billion in the company through an offer-for-sale. The offer-for-sale is expected to happen soon, and the government may offer shares at an attractive discount to the current market price, CNBC-TV18 reported, quoting sources.
Meanwhile, select automobile and financial services stocks supported the Nifty 50 index. Some energy companies also aided the 50-stock index. HDFC Life Insurance Co. was the top gainer in the index, up more than 3%. Shriram Finance gained over 1%. Bajaj Auto and Mahindra & Mahindra were the second- and third-best performers, respectively, in the index, up 2–3%. Shares of Bajaj Auto rose to their highest in more than a year after the company's Jan-Mar earnings were above the Street's estimate. For the March quarter, the company posted a net profit of INR 27.46 billion on a revenue of INR 160.06 billion. Analysts had expected its bottom line to be INR 26.31 billion and top line at INR 157.80 billion. NTPC and Oil and Natural Gas Corp. ended over 1% higher each.
One 97 Communications was the best performer in the Nifty 200, ending almost 8% higher. The stock rose after the company reported a net profit of INR 1.84 billion for the March quarter, against a net loss of INR 5.40 billion in the year-ago quarter. Polycab India was also among the top performers in the 200-stock index, closing almost 7% higher after hitting a 52-week high of INR 9,025. The stock extended its rise for the second session after the company posted a consolidated net profit of INR 7.73 billion, up over 6% on year. Its top line for the quarter was INR 88.64 billion, an on-year rise of nearly 27%.
Tejas Networks was among the top performers in the Nifty 500, ending over 15% higher. The stock rose for the fourth successive session to close at INR 533.40 after touching a six-month high of INR 554.95.
