Equity Alert: Markets to rise further on hopes of US-Iran war de-escalation

MUMBAI--1631 IST--The Nifty 50 is expected to extend gains as investors draw confidence from signs of easing geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran. The overall market undertone remains positive, and easing crude oil prices, coupled with an appreciating rupee, are expected to support the sentiment, analysts said. On Wednesday, the Nifty 50 ended 1.2% higher at 24330.95 points.

The Nifty 50 is likely to continue its upward move and has broken the eight-day consolidation phase, said Jatin Gedia, vice president, technical research at Teji Mandi Investment Technologies. Gedia expects the 50-stock index to find support at 23800 points and resistance at 24600 points. Any decisive move above the resistance level is likely to see the Nifty 50 move towards 25000 points, he added.

If US-Iran negotiations progress, the prolonged consolidation phase in the Nifty 50 could begin transitioning into a more durable market re-rating, according to Siddhartha Khemka, head of research at Wealth Management, Motilal Oswal Financial Services. "Supportive domestic macros and a steady Q4FY26 (March quarter) earnings season continue to underpin broader sentiment," Khemka said in a note.

Indian markets rallied on a risk-on sentiment driven by potential easing of the US-Iran war and China's diplomatic engagement, said Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments. Nair said these factors contained crude oil prices, though the trend remains headline-sensitive. At 1328 IST, the May Futures of Brent crude oil were down more than 9% to $99.87 per barrel. Crude oil prices eased after media reports said that the White House is nearing an agreement to end the war with Iran on a one-page memorandum. The domestic currency gained 0.7% to 94.6100 against the dollar. (Adhithya Aji)

Equity Alert: Indices end sharply higher on hopes of West Asia de-escalation

MUMBAI--1541 IST--Benchmark indices ended sharply higher on hopes that the US and Iran are close to reaching an agreement to end the war, analysts said. Crude oil prices declined 7% after media reports said that the White House is nearing an agreement to end the war with Iran on a one-page memorandum. Banking stocks performed the best among sectors.

The Nifty 50 ended at 24330.95 points, down 298.15 points or 1.2%, and the BSE Sensex ended at 77958.52 points, up 940.73 points or 1.2%.

InterGlobe Aviation's shares closed nearly 7% higher, becoming the top gainer in the Nifty 50, as the decline in crude oil prices is likely to reduce fuel costs for the airline operator. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles ended 5% higher to be the second top gainer. Heavyweight banking stocks – HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank ended 3% and 2% higher, respectively. Banking stocks State Bank of India and Axis Bank ended around 3% higher each. Shriram Finance, Trent, Asian Paints, Adani Enterprises, Eternal, and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories ended around 3-4% higher.

Oil upstream companies – Oil and Natural Gas Corp. and Oil India fell sharply. ONGC was the worst-hit stock in the Nifty 50, closing over 3% lower. Oil India was the worst-hit stock in both the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices, ending nearly 6% lower. The stock closed nearly 6% lower. A near-7 % fall in May Brent crude oil futures to around $102 per barrel triggered a decline in the shares of these oil explorers.

The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved an Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme with an outlay of INR 181 billion to support banks and airlines amid the impact of the war in West Asia. This also sparked a positive sentiment in these stocks. Nifty PSU Bank was the best-performing sectoral index, ending nearly 3% higher. All the constituents in the index ended higher. All the broader market indices mirrored the gains in their benchmark peers. The Nifty small-cap and Nifty mid-cap indices ended around 2% higher each.

In the Nifty 200, Coforge ended nearly 10% higher on strong March quarter results, making it the top gainer. Yes Bank and SRF ended 8% higher each in the index. SRF's shares gained after the company's Jan-Mar consolidated net profit and revenue beat analysts' estimates.

Wockhardt closed as the top gainer in the Nifty 500, closing nearly 12% higher as the company posted a net profit for the March quarter against a net loss in the previous one. Firstsource Solutions ended over 11% higher after the company's March quarter net profit rose nearly 71% sequentially.  (Adhithya Aji)

Equity Alert: European indices soar over 2% on hopes of US-Iran peace deal

MUMBAI--1500 IST--Stock indices in Europe soared Wednesday as hopes of a ceasefire between the US and Iran revived market sentiment. Almost all indices gained over 2%, and at 1453 IST, the pan-European STOXX 600 was up 2%. Brent Crude oil futures fell more than 6% to around $103 per barrel. An earnings-driven rally was also witnessed in the stock markets. At 1453 IST, only 10 stocks in the FTSE 100, and five in France's CAC 40 were in the red.

The White House is getting close to an agreement with Iran on a one-page memorandum of understanding to end the war, media agency Axios reported, citing sources. US President Donald Trump had earlier said that "great progress" had been made on peace talks with the West Asian nation.

Among some key stocks in news was the Wegovy-manufacturer Novo Nordisk. Shares of the company surged climbed almost 7% after the company's earnings for the quarter ended March beat estimates. Demand for the company's weight-loss drug, Wegovy, was much better than expected. "...strong Wegovy performance, combined with continued growth in international operations, has led us to raise our 2026 guidance for both adjusted sales and adjusted operating profit," Mike Doustdar, president and CEO of Novo Nordisk, said in an earnings press release.

In some macroeconomic news, the European Central Bank's wage tracker, excluding one-off payments, indicated 2.6% growth in 2026, unchanged from the last projection ‌in March. However, uncertain economic conditions could lead to a stronger role for one-off payments, the central bank said in a release.

Equity Alert: Indices recover from lows; pharma, bank shares lead gains

MUMBAI--1450 IST--Headline indices recovered after slipping into the red earlier, with the Nifty 50 breaching the 24300 level. The 50-stock index was supported by gains in shares of pharmaceutical companies and select banks. Shares of insurers, financial services, and automobile companies were also among the notable gainers in the index.

At 1450 IST, the Nifty 50 was at 24350.40, up 1.3%, while the BSE Sensex rose 1.3% to 77987.81. India VIX, the market's fear gauge, was down by over 6% at 16.8325. July futures of Brent crude oil slipped 7% to nearly $103 per barrel, after US President Donald Trump's comments about suspending "Project Freedom" signalled a de-escalation of hostilities with Iran. However, given the absence of a durable resolution to the conflict thus far, India's macroeconomic outlook could be weak, according to a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. The brokerage noted the probability of the conflict continuing and resulting in the asymmetric impact of higher-for-longer crude oil prices.

As crude prices fell further, InterGlobe Aviation shares extended their gains, climbing nearly 7%. The stock was the top performer in the Nifty 50 index. Shares of pharmaceutical companies Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Cipla, and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries were among the other top gainers, climbing 2–4%. Shares of HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, and State Bank of India were up 2–3%, supporting the gains in the benchmark index.

Shares of state-owned energy company Oil and Natural Gas Corp. shed nearly 3%, becoming the worst-performing stock in the index. Shares of Power Grid Corp. of India were 1% lower, while those of NTPC and Coal India fell marginally. Shares of Larsen & Toubro pared some of the losses but were still 1.4% lower. Information technology stocks Wipro, HCL Technologies, and Infosys shed 0.2–0.7% lower.

Broader market indices outperformed their benchmarks, with gains of around 2%, while most sectoral indices also posted gains. While Nifty Pharma and Nifty PSU Banks were the highest sectoral gainers, climbing around 2.5% each, the Nifty FMCG and Nifty Energy were down around 0.2% each.

In the Nifty 200, shares of Coforge held onto their gains of nearly 10%. The company's bottom line for the March quarter nearly doubled on year to INR 6.12 billion. Shares of Billionbrains Garage Ventures were down 5% and were the worst-performing stock in the index. Among other laggards, shares of KPIT Technologies fell sharply, shedding nearly 4% after the company's consolidated net profit for the March quarter came at INR 1.63 billion, missing the Street's view of INR 1.97 billion. In the Nifty 500, shares of Wockhardt remained the top gainer, trading over 13% higher, while shares of Aditya Infotech were the worst-hit, down 5%. (Shruti Nair)

Equity Alert: Vodafone Idea up 5%; Kumar M Birla to be non-executive chairman

MUMBAI--1415 IST--Shares of debt-ridden telecommunications company Vodafone Idea jumped over 5% to an intraday high of INR 11.38 on NSE wednesday, a day after the company said Aditya Birla group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla has been appointed as its new non-executive chairman. Birla will replace Ravinder Takkar, who stepped down from the position, but will continue as the company's non-executive vice-chairman. Around 665 million shares of the company have changed hands on the NSE so far, almost same as Tuesday.

Shares of the company have risen over 11% so far in the week. On Monday, the shares closed 3% higher after the committee appointed by the Department of Telecommunications finalised the amount of the company's adjusted gross revenue dues at INR 640.46 billion as on Dec. 31, 2025. The company will pay a minimum of INR 1 billion per year over four years, starting 2031-32 (Apr-Mar). The gross revenue liability on the company was slashed about 27%. The resolution of this long-running issue has significantly improved the company's financial position, Citi Research said in a report.

Of the six brokerage reports available with Informist on the stock, three have a 'buy' recommendation and three a 'hold' or an equivalent call on the stock.  (Eshitva Prakash)

Equity Alert: Asian markets end higher on renewed hope of US-Iran truce

MUMBAI--1405 IST--Stock markets in Asia settled healthily in the green territory as market participants cheered US President Donald Trump's statement on seeing great progress in peace talks with Iran. Trump also said he paused 'Project Freedom' for a short period. Brent Crude oil futures slid nearly 3% and hovered near $106 per barrel.

South Korea's benchmark KOSPI index surged 7% intraday to hit a fresh record high for the second straight session. The index crossed the 7000 mark for the first time, supported by a rally in technology stocks. The surge in chip stocks overnight in the US markets also likely aided market sentiment. Shares of heavyweight Samsung Electronics Co. closed almost 15% higher. SK Hynix, which is the second-largest stock by market capitalisation in the index, gained nearly 11%.

Meanwhile the RatingDog China General Services Business Activity Index was at 52.6 points in April, slightly higher than 52.1 in March. Growth in new businesses supported this uptick. New orders, aided by better market conditions in the country, rose for the 40th successive month, RatingDog's report noted. "The manageable cost environment allowed firms room to maintain price competitiveness. The sustainability of growth will hinge on the continued resilience of domestic demand," Yao Yu, the founder at RatingDog, said in the report.

Further, Ausrtalia's industrial activity improved slightly in April. The AiG Group Industry Index rebounded to (-)24.4 in the previous month from (-)34.2 in March. Better employment and new orders supported this growth but concern from elevated energy prices continue to linger. "Fuel levies on transport services were the primary vector of inflationary pressure in April," the report by AiG said. Pricing pressure is likely to worsen as the high costs are starting be passed on.

Equity Alert: Traders cut down positions in options, Nifty 50 to consolidate

MUMBAI--1330 IST--Traders cut down positions in the options chain, with them writing call options aggressively, and buying in-the-money put contracts, leading to pressure on the headline Nifty 50 index at higher levels. Options chain indicates the index will remain in a thin range in the near term and any meaningful movement can be seen only if the index breaches 23800-24350 points, two derivatives analysts said.

Traders were clearly indecisive as to where the index may move as they changed positions in the options chain too quickly, with the premiums changing between red and green. Further, the premiums were also less, indicating that traders were hesitant to make long positions. Analysts had said that a sharp rise in the market can be expected only when there is a resolution to the West Asia war and the transit through the Strait of Hormuz restarts which would ease crude oil prices.

At 1313 IST, the Nifty 50 was flat at 24036.10 points. Earlier in the day, the index had risen over 200 points to reach 24250.85 points. Derivatives analysts had said traders would take every dip as a buying opportunity in the near term.

Premiums in the immediate out-of-the-money call contracts at strike prices such as 24200, 24100, and 24150 fell only 4-5%. This indicates that the upside for the index in the near term is capped. The highest addition of contracts for both call and put was at 24200 strike. As for the premiums in the put side, rise in premiums was a scant 1%. Traders bought in-the-money put contracts at strikes such as 24200 and 24100 the most, indicating that  any rise would be limited.  (Gopika Balasubramanium)

Equity Alert: KPIT Technologies dn 6%; co's Q4 PAT misses Street's estimates

MUMBAI--1324 IST--Shares of KPIT Technologies fell over 6% to the day's low of INR 722.50. The stock was down over 9% from the day's high of INR 795.30 after the company released its March quarter earnings during market hours. The technology company's consolidated net profit for the reporting quarter failed to meet the Street's expectations.

The company reported a consolidated net profit of INR 1.63 billion, up over 22% on quarter. However, the bottom line failed to meet analysts' estimate of INR 1.97 billion. For the December quarter, the company had incurred a one-time cost of INR 592.12 million on account of implementation of new labour codes. Adjusting for this, the net profit for the reporting quarter is down nearly 16% sequentially. The top line of the company grew nearly 6% on quarter to INR 17.11 billion, above the Street's estimate of INR 16.93 billion.

At 1312 IST, shares of the company traded over 3% lower at INR 746.05. Over 4 million shares of the company changed hands on the NSE, over four times the number of shares traded till the same time Tuesday. Before the release of the Jan-Mar results, over 1 million shares of the company exchanged hands on NSE.  (Adhithya Aji)

The pharmaceutical and biotechnology major reported a consolidated net profit of INR 1.66 billion for the reporting quarter, compared with a net loss of INR 250 million in the year-ago quarter. Its consolidated earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation for the quarter more than doubled on year to INR 1.96 billion while its revenue jumped nearly 30% to INR 9.65 billion. Its EBIDTA margin for the quarter expanded by 960 basis points on year to 20.3%.

The company's revenue from its overall biotech operations more than doubled on year to INR 2.52 billion, led by robust growth in its emerging market biotech segment, Wockhardt said in a post-earnings press release. Growth in the emerging market biotech segment was driven by accelerated business opportunities, partnerships, and new deal acquisitions from key markets like Thailand, Egypt, Algeria and Latin America.

Its India biotech operations continue to grow at a double-digit pace and is poised for a decent growth in the future, Wockhardt said. Equity Alert: Indices down a tad; energy cos main laggard, RIL sheds over 2%

MUMBAI--1300 IST--Benchmark indices gave up earlier gains and fell a tad, with the Nifty 50 only slightly above the 24000 level as more of its constituents traded in the red. Stocks of select energy companies and FMCG players extended losses and remained a drag on the 50-stock index. Stocks of pharmaceutical and select insurance companies were the primary gainers in the benchmark index.

At 1250 IST, the Nifty 50 was at 24006, down 0.1%, while the BSE Sensex was down 0.3% at 76789.25. Shares of Larsen & Toubro were down over 3%, the worst-performing stock in the index. Equity Alert: Airlines, banks' shrs higher after govt approves credit scheme

MUMBAI--1250 IST--Shares of aviation companies and public sector banks traded higher after the Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved an Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme with an outlay of INR 181 billion to support micro, small, and medium enterprises and airlines affected by the war in West Asia. Analysts expect this will reduce the credit risk on incremental loans, which will push lending activities and provide better asset quality buffer for banks. This will also be a big relief for airline players which have been struggling to manage their working capital requirements.

"Recent commentary from banks signals that there are some asset quality concerns with MSME players," Sunny Agrawal, head of research at SBICAPS said. "There are two main challenges for these companies. First, shipment costs have risen due to the war in West Asia and second, there is a large inflationary pressure due to a jump in crude oil prices," the analyst said. He added that a sovereign lending guarantee would give banks more confidence to lend without the risk of asset quality deterioration. "The scheme is a net positive for banks, providing a modest loan growth tailwind and a more meaningful near-term asset quality buffer," Nomura said in a research report.

At 1225 IST, shares of InterGlobe Aviation were over 3% higher at INR 4,373.75 on the National Stock Exchange. The BSE-listed SpiceJet was up nearly 5% at INR 12.70. The Nifty PSU Bank index was almost 1% higher, with Bank of Maharashtra, Union Bank of India, and Punjab & Sind Bank trading 1.5–3.0% higher. Non-banking financial services companies that generally have high MSME exposure, such as Bajaj Finance, Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Co., Shriram Finance, L&T Finance, and SBFC Finance, were up 1-3%.

The Cabinet approved INR 181 billion for the credit line scheme. The scheme aims to provide credit guarantee coverage of 100% for MSMEs for the amount in default under the additional credit facility extended to eligible borrowers who may be facing short-term liquidity mismatches. The scheme will apply to all loans sanctioned till the end of 2026-27 (Apr-Mar). The government is targeting a total additional credit flow of INR 2.55 trillion under the scheme, including INR 50 billion for the aviation sector. Under the scheme, additional credit of up to 20% of peak working capital utilised during Jan-Mar, up to INR 1 billion, will be given as support. For airlines, up to 100% of working capital, capped at INR 15 billion per borrower, will be given.  (Eshitva Prakash)

Equity Alert: Coforge up 11% after co's Jan-Mar consol PAT doubles on year

MUMBAI--1245 IST--Shares of Coforge rose nearly 11% to an intraday high of INR 1,295.80 after the information technology company's consolidated net profit for the March quarter more than doubled both on year and on a sequential basis. For the March quarter, Coforge reported a consolidated net profit of INR 6.12 billion, sharply above analysts' estimate of INR 4.38 billion.

The company's revenue rose 30% on year and over 5% on quarter to INR 44.50 billion. The top line slightly missed the estimate of INR 44.56 billion. The management of the company gave a consolidated EBIT margin guidance of 15.5% for 2026-27 (Apr-Mar). For the March quarter, the metric was at 16.6%, up 230 basis points sequentially.

The strong improvement in margins is likely due to adoption of artificial intelligence at a scale, the planned closure of a low-margin travel portfolio in India, and general and administrative synergies of 20-25% from business with Encora, Nirmal Bang Institutional Equities said. Barring the contribution from the recently acquired AI firm, Encora, the management expects the standalone EBIT margin to be around 16.5-17% for FY27. "The gap between the standalone and consolidated EBIT margins is on the back of amortisation which has an annual impact of $40 million," Nirmal Bang said.

The brokerage has trimmed the target price on Coforge's stock over 7% to INR 1,543 due to sector-wide pressure in the travel, transportation, and hospitality segment on the back of high jet fuel prices. This is likely to impact clients of the company and their ability to spend, the brokerage added. Global brokerage Morgan Stanley maintained an 'overweight' call on the stock with a target price of INR 1,500. It expects Coforge to be a relative growth leader in the sector despite a weak IT demand backdrop, ET Now reported.

At 1238 IST, shares of the company were up 9% at INR 1,274. Over 22 million shares of the company changed hands on NSE, higher than nearly 687,000 shares traded till the same time Tuesday. The number of shares traded Wednesday was over six times the average three-month volume.  (Adhithya Aji)

Equity Alert: M&M at 2-mo high as Q4 PAT jumps 53% YoY; co sees AI-led gains

MUMBAI--1240 IST--Shares of Mahindra & Mahindra rose over 3% to a two-month high of INR 3,315.70 after the company's March quarter net profit jumped over 53% on year. The bottom line also beat the Street's estimate for the quarter. The stock extended its gains for the third straight session and has risen 7% in this period. Volume of the traded shares jumped over three-fold from the previous session.

At 1152 IST, shares of the company were nearly 2% higher at INR 3,270.20 on the NSE. So far in the day, nearly 4 million shares of the company have changed hands on the exchange, higher than 1 million shares traded till the same time Tuesday.

M&M reported a net profit of INR 37.37 billion for the March quarter, up over 53% on year. However, on a sequential basis, the bottom line fell 5%. The automaker's top line was reported at 395.54 billion, up over 26% on year and up nearly 3% sequentially. Analysts estimated the bottom line at INR 34.93 billion and the top line at INR 383.40 billion.

Artificial intelligence initiatives are expected to make meaningful gains for the company, the management said in a post-earnings conference call with analysts on Tuesday. It sees group arm Mahindra Finance likely disbursing an additional INR 100 billion in 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) driven by artificial intelligence. A rise in fuel prices could accelerate electric vehicle adoption, the management said.

Most brokerages have retained their 'buy' recommendation on the stock. Jefferies kept the 'buy' recommendation on M&M unchanged but trimmed the target price by over 11% to INR 4,000. Elara Securities also retained the 'buy' call and cut the target price by 8% to INR 4,367.

Brokerage Motilal Oswal Financial Services maintained its 'buy' recommendation with a target price of INR 3,963. The brokerage has raised its earnings-per-share estimates for FY27 and FY28 by 4% and 3%, respectively. The company is expected to post revenue at a compound annual growth rate of around 15% over FY26 to FY28, the brokerage said. Its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation and net profit are seen at a compound annual growth rate of 12% and 13%, respectively, for the same period.

All the 14 brokerage recommendations available with Informist on the company have a 'buy' call with an average target price of INR 4,163.  (Arundathi A R)
