NEW DELHI – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs Tuesday approved the setting up of a ship repair facility at Vadinar, Gujarat. The outlay for the project will be INR 15.70 billion, and it will take 36 months to be completed, the government said.
The facility will be built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd. and Deendayal Port Authority. Upon completion, the facility will repair 34 ships per year. The project is planned as a brownfield facility with a 650 metres jetty, two large floating dry docks, workshops and associated marine infrastructure, the government said in a release.
"The Vadinar Ship Repair Facility will directly address a critical gap in India's ship repair infrastructure, as the country currently lacks adequate domestic capacity to repair large vessels exceeding 230m in length," the government said. "By enabling repair of vessels up to 300m, the facility will allow highvalue repairs of large vessels within India. This will significantly reduce dependence on foreign shipyards and curb foreign exchange outflow."
The project is expected to create about 290 direct and around 1,100 indirect jobs across ship repair, logistics, and ancillary industries, the government said. End
