IMD sees heavy rainfall continuing in parts of south India over next 7 days

MUMBAI – A north-south trough, which runs from south Madhya Pradesh to the Gulf of Mannar, is expected to help continue the spell of heavy rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next six days, over Kerala in the next seven days, and over south interior Karnataka from Thursday to Saturday, the India Meteorological Department said. Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over most parts of south peninsular India till Saturday, the weather department said.
A trough runs from the cyclonic circulation over central parts of south Madhya Pradesh to Bihar, while a north-south trough runs to the east of the country, the weather department said. Under the influence of these troughs, heavy rainfall is likely over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Wednesday, and over Bihar on Wednesday. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected over parts of Gangetic West Bengal till Wednesday, and over Bihar on Wednesday. A wet spell with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is expected over multiple parts of east India till Monday, the department said.
Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of Assam and Meghalaya till Wednesday, the weather bureau said. Light to moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over several parts of northeast India till Friday, the bureau said.
A western disturbance acting as a cyclonic circulation lies over Kashmir, and a trough runs to the northwest of the country, the weather department said. An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over Haryana, and another upper air cyclonic circulation lies over southwest Rajasthan. A third upper air cyclonic circulation lies over east Uttar Pradesh, the weather department said. These weather systems are expected to cause light to moderate rainfall or snowfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over most parts of northwest India till Monday, the department said.
Light to moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over parts of Madhya Pradesh from Wednesday to Saturday, and over Chhattisgarh till Saturday, the weather bureau said.
Heatwave conditions are expected in parts of west Rajasthan from Saturday to Monday, the weather bureau said. Hot and humid weather conditions are likely to persist in pockets of Andhra Pradesh till Wednesday, in Konkan to Goa from Wednesday to Saturday, and over Gujarat from Saturday to Monday, the bureau said.
