MUMBAI – Heavy pre-monsoon rainfall has been lashing Bengaluru for the past four to five days, and the city observatory recorded a whopping 111 millimetres of rain Sun-Mon, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. The intensity of pre-monsoon activity over the city is likely to dip on Tuesday and Wednesday, and decline further till Friday, the weather agency said. However, the development of fresh weather systems over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal could revive pre-monsoon activities over the city next week, the agency said.
Bengaluru had remained largely dry for most of April. However, the formation of multiple weather systems over and near the city caused heavy showers during the last few days of April, subsequently leading to a wet start to May, Skymet said. The seasonal peninsular India north-south trough is currently extending from Vidarbha to the Comorin region, passing across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, south interior Karnataka, and the borders of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
This trough keeps oscillating east to west and varies the spread and intensity of rainfall over Bengaluru, the agency said. This weather system is also aided by the rising heat during the afternoon hours and becomes active during the evening and night hours. It gets adequate moisture from moist winds streaming from the Bay of Bengal across coastal Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. This pattern of the weather system will persist till Friday, causing a wet spell over the city.
The intensity and spread of showers over Bengaluru is likely to reduce on Tuesday and Wednesday. Light pre-monsoon activities will continue on Thursday and Friday, the weather agency said. A weather system likely to develop over the southwest Arabian Sea in the equatorial region and its subsequent movement over the southern and south-central parts of the country is likely to dislocate the trough lying over the city. Another weather system may develop over the Bay of Bengal to revive pre-monsoon activity over the region next week, the agency said. End
