NEW DELHI – In a stunning upset, West Bengal Chief Minister and All India Trinamool Congress President Mamata Banerjee lost the assembly election from the Bhabanipur constituency to the Bharatiya Janata Party's Suvendu Adhikari, her one-time aide-turned-nemesis. Adhikari, leader of the Opposition in the outgoing state assembly, had contested from two constituencies. He also won in Nandigram where, in 2021, he had beaten Banerjee for the first time.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam President M.K. Stalin also lost in Kolathur to actor-turned-politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam's V.S. Babu by 8,795 votes.

While 13 ministers in the Left Democratic Front government in Kerala lost the election, outgoing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan retained his seat with a reduced margin. Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma won handily from his traditional Jalukbari constituency.

According to the latest data from the Election Commission of India, the BJP wrested West Bengal from the Trinamool Congress and retained Assam. The Indian National Congress won in Kerala and the newcomer Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam was set to be the single largest party in Tamil Nadu.  End
