NEW DELHI – The central government will work with the new governments of Kerala and Tamil Nadu for the development and betterment of citizens, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday. Addressing Bharatiya Janata Party workers after a landslide victory in West Bengal and ahead of a third consecutive term in Assam, Modi said his party would try to meet expectations.

As per latest data provided by the Election Commission of India, the saffron party wrested West Bengal from Mamata Banerjee's All India Trinamool Congress, while retaining Assam. The Indian National Congress won in Kerala and debutant Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam led by actor Vijay Thalapathy swept Tamil Nadu.

Referring to the Left Democratic Front's loss in Kerala, Modi said now not even a single state would be ruled by the Communist party. This, he said, reflected the change in the mindset of citizens. The aspiring youth of the country demand opportunity, progress, and stability, Modi said.

Expressing gratitude to the voters of West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry, Modi said that some states had witnessed record voter turnout and women's participation. On Apr. 23, voting for all 234 legislative Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu and for 152 of the 294 seats in West Bengal witnessed around 82.24% and 89.93% voter turnout, respectively. In the second phase of polling in West Bengal, the state witnessed voter turnout of 91.66%.

Modi said the huge mandate for the BJP in West Bengal and Assam showed citizens associate the National Democratic Alliance government with good governance. He said that the people of West Bengal had rejected the politics of appeasement and the new government would work tirelessly to develop the state. In the first Cabinet meeting, the West Bengal government would approve implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana and concrete steps would be taken against infiltrators from across the national border, he said.  End
