MUMBAI – Benchmark equity indices closed higher, reacting to the cooling down of crude oil prices and remarks from US President Donald Trump saying the country will "help free up" ships stuck in the Strait of Hormuz from Monday. The Nifty 50 settled at 24119.30 points Monday, up 0.5% or 121.75 points. The BSE Sensex closed at 77269.40 points, up 0.5% or 355.90 points. Only 13 constituents ended in the red for the session.
Crude oil prices eased to $109 per barrel from higher levels of above $115 per barrel in the previous sessions.
"Many of these ships are running low on food, and everything else necessary for large-scale crews to stay on board in a healthy and sanitary manner," Trump said in his Truth Social post, adding that any interference in the operation would "unfortunately, have to be dealt with forcefully." At 1539 IST, the July futures contract of Brent crude was 1.5% higher at $109.81 a barrel.
The 50-stock index regained the 24000 level after it slipped below the same in the previous session. India VIX, which closed in the red at 18.3000, showed the easing of nervousness among investors. The volatility index ended nearly 1% lower.

Hindustan Unilever was also among the top gainers in the index, up 2.6%. The company reported significant on-year growth in its net profit for the March quarter and surpassed the analysts' view for the same. Its revenue for the quarter also rose on year, but missed the Street's estimate.
Vedanta and Bharat Heavy Electricals ended as the top gainers in the Nifty 200 index. Vedanta rose nearly 9?spite the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal rejecting the company's plea challenging Adani Enterprises's INR-145-billion resolution plan for debt-ridden Jaiprakash Associates.
