NEW DELHI – India's goods and services tax collections grew 8.7% on year to INR 2.247 trillion in April, government data released Friday showed. This was the first month when the government did not collect anything from cess after the pending payments under it were cleared. On a month-on-month basis, the GST mop-up rose 12.3%.
As per the revised Budget estimates, the government's GST collections in 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) are projected to grow 6.3% on year.
In September, the GST Council had lowered the indirect tax on several goods and services and reduced the number of tax slabs to two--5% and 18%--from four earlier. The council had also removed the compensation cess on all items, including tobacco products, for which the levy ended on Jan. 31. The government has instead imposed an excise duty on cigarettes in the range of INR 2,050-INR 8,500 per thousand sticks based on the length and type of product.
Central GST collection in April was INR 521 billion, up from INR 486 billion a year ago. State GST collection last month was INR 613 billion, up from INR 594 billion collected in April 2025. Integrated GST mop-up was INR 1.292 trillion, up from INR 1.154 trillion a year ago.
Domestic GST revenue grew just 0.3% on year in April to INR 1.161 trillion and import revenue increased 42.9% on year to INR 958 billion. GST revenue, net of refunds rose 7.3% on year to INR 2.109 trillion in April. Refunds during the month rose 19.3% on year to INR 317.93 billion. The post-settlement revenue of states was INR 1.175 trillion in April, up 40% on year. End
