M&M Apr SUV sales growth down at 8-mo low of 8% YoY; total auto sales up 14%

MUMBAI – The wholesale sales of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.'s sports utility vehicles grew 8% on year but fell 6.5% on month in April to 56,331 units, the company said Friday. This was the weakest year-on-year growth in the sale of its SUVs since August, when despatches had fallen almost 9% on year. M&M sold 94,627 automobile units in April, up 14% on year. 

 

Overall, despatches of commercial vehicles for April stood at 23,427 units. The company sold 2,984 light commercial vehicles to dealerships in April, up 13% on year. These vehicles have a payload capacity of below two tonnes. The sales of light commercial vehicles with a payload capacity of over two tonnes but below 3.5 tonnes grew 7% on year to 20,443 units. Despatches of three-wheelers surged 81% on year to 9,899 units. Exports by M&M grew 47% on year to 4,970 units. 

 

FARM SEGMENT

M&M sold 48,411 tractors in April, up 21% on year. In India, the company sold 46,404 tractors, up 20% on year. "This strong performance was delivered despite the absence of Chaitra Navratri in April this year, unlike last year when April included seven Navratri days. In the export markets, we have sold 2,007 tractors, a growth of 30% over last year," the company said.

 

TRUCKS & BUSES

Despatches of the company's trucks and buses, including exports, grew 11% on year to 3,011 units. Sales in this segment comprise despatches by Mahindra Trucks & Buses division and SML Mahindra Ltd.

 

Of this, despatches of cargo vehicles increased 8% on year to 1,159 units. Wholesale sales of passenger vehicles by this business grew 14% on year to 1,852 units.

 

For the quarter ended December, M&M had reported net profit of INR 39.31 billion and revenue of INR 385.17 billion. Thursday, its shares closed 1.7% lower at INR 3,097.50 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
