NEW DELHI – The government has withheld sugar sales quota for May of 16 mills as they misreported and violated stockholding limit in previous months. Therefore, now the notified sales quota for pan-India sugar mills have been lowered at 2.18 million tonnes for May, against the earlier announced quota of 2.25 million tonnes.
"On examination of the closing stock reported by sugar mills in the P2 form for the month of March, 2026, the reported closing stock is lower than the stock calculated as per the data provided by the mill," the notification said. The government allocates the maximum quantity of sugar that can be sold in a month by a mill and state to check prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers.
