MUMBAI – The government has increased the base import price of edible oils in the range of $3-$28 per tonne, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs said in a notification on Thursday. The revised rates will come into effect on Friday.

The Centre levies import duty ad valorem and reviews base import prices, depending on changes in global prices and foreign exchange rates. The government normally revises base import prices of edible oils every fortnight, and these are used to calculate the duty on these commodities brought into the country. The base import prices of edible oils were last revised on Apr. 15.

The base import price of crude palm oil has been raised by $28 per tonne and that of refined, bleached, and deodorised palm oil has been raised by $27 per tonne. The government has raised the base import price of both crude palmolein oil and refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein oil by $28 per tonne each. It has raised the price of crude soyoil by $3 per tonne.

India is the largest importer of edible oils. Palm oil accounts for bulk of the country's imports, with most of it purchased from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, which are the top producers of the commodity.

The following table details the base import prices of edible oils compared with the previous levels, in dollars per tonne, and the revision in absolute terms in dollars:
