MUMBAI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs of the country was 71.08 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, down from 75.00 billion cubic metres a week ago, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level as of Thursday accounted for 38.7% of the total live storage capacity, up 14.1% from a year ago and 26.5% above the average storage over the past 10 years, the data showed. All five regions in the country recorded a decline in water levels from the previous week.

 

As of Thursday, the water level in reservoirs in the northern region, including Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab, was 8.59 billion cubic metres, representing 43.3% of the total live capacity. In the same period last year, the water level was 23.4% of the total capacity. 

 

The water level in reservoirs in the eastern region was 7.48 billion cubic metres, or 34.4% of the total live storage capacity, higher than 29.3% a year ago. The region comprises Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.

 

Reservoirs in the western region held 17.19 billion cubic metres, or 45.1% of the total live storage capacity of 53 reservoirs in the region, up from 37.5% a year ago. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.

 

In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 22.24 billion cubic metres. As of Thursday, the water level was 45.8% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 41.4% a year ago.

 

The water level in the southern region was 15.58 billion cubic metres, which is 28.2% of the total live storage capacity of the 47 reservoirs in the region, the data showed. This region includes Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. At this time last year, the water level was 30.5% of the total live storage capacity. 

 

As of Thursday, 85 out of 166 reservoirs across the country had water levels below 40% of the total live storage capacity, the data showed. One reservoir was at full capacity, while four reservoirs had water levels between 91% and 99%. Three reservoirs recorded water levels between 81% and 90%, 12 between 71% and 80%, 14 between 61% and 70%, 16 between 51% and 60%, and 31 between 41% and 50% of the total capacity.

 

India received an average rainfall of 5.6 millimetres in the week ended Wednesday, 46% below the normal of 10.3 millimetres for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
