NEW DELHI – Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei Thursday said that a "new chapter" for the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz is unfolding now and that it will be a "future without America".

"Today, two months after the world's biggest campaign and aggression in the region, and America's shameful failure in its own plan, a new chapter is emerging in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz," Mojtaba Khamenei said in a statement circulated by state-owned Iranian Republic News Agency, parts of which were also shared on Khamenei's social media handle.

Iran has laid a soft blockade of the Strait of Hormuz since Feb. 28 and has insisted on its right to levy a toll tax on ships crossing the busy waterway that has a fifth of the world's energy transiting through it.

The supreme leader's message came on National Persian Gulf Day, which celebrates the expulsion of Portuguese forces from the Strait of Hormuz in 1622. The statement said that Hormuz has "aroused the greed of many devils in the past", but Iranians have witnessed "the beautiful manifestations of the steadfastness, vigilance, and courageous struggle" of Iranian forces since the war with US-Israel alliance broke out.

Khamenei blamed the US military presence in West Asia for regional insecurity. He said the US' "puppet bases" do not even have the capacity to ensure their own security, let alone ensuring the security of "US-worshippers" in the region. Tehran has been asking the Gulf Cooperation Council countries to dismantle the US military bases on their soil. These bases were hit by Iran during the war.

Meanwhile, the US is continuing with a naval blockade of Iranian ports around the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman, with President Donald Trump calling it "a success" and urging Tehran to "just give up". The soaring tensions have sent the global crude oil prices touching $126 a barrel Thursday.  End
