NEW DELHI – The Directorate General of Foreign Trade has asked exporters to apply for wheat export licences from May 1-10. The allocations will be within the 2.5 million tonnes export quota the government recently permitted, according to a notification.

On Apr. 20, the government approved an additional wheat export quota of 2.5 million tonnes, taking the total permitted shipments to 5.0 million tonnes. The government had earlier permitted the export of 2.5 million tonnes wheat on Feb. 13, effectively lifting the four-year ban on wheat exports.

Of the latest 2.5-million-tonne quota, about 72% or 1.8 million tonnes shall be allocated to exporters, who have a minimum average annual export turnover of INR 1.50 billion in the last three years, the notification said. Such exporters must apply for a minimum of 50,000 tonnes and submit certificates issued by a chartered accountant.

About 500,000 tonnes shall be considered for applications submitted by state trading enterprises and cooperative societies. "Balance quantity of 2 LMT out of 25 LMT shall be allocated to existing MSME exporters, and have applied for not less than 10,000 metric tonnes," the notification said.

The licences will be valid for six months from the date of issuance, and will be strictly non-transferable. Exporters are required to submit monthly progress reports of exports to the government by the 5th of every month, it added. End
