MUMBAI – Temperatures in Delhi dropped significantly on Wednesday as the city recorded widespread light rainfall, cooling it down from the recent heatwave conditions, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. Pre-monsoon showers and thundershowers are likely to increase over the city from Saturday to Thursday, keeping the maximum temperature below 40 degrees Celsius and thus preventing chances of a heatwave over the city, the weather agency said.

On Wednesday, the maximum temperature in Delhi dropped 3 degrees Celsius from the previous day to 39.2 degrees Celsius due to persistent clouding and showers over the city, the weather agency said. In the past few days, the maximum temperature in the city has remained above 40 degrees Celsius. The region recorded the warmest night of the season on Tuesday when the minimum rose to 28.4 degrees Celsius during the morning hours, the agency said.

Currently, a western disturbance is moving across north India, which is associated with a cyclonic circulation lying over south Punjab, north Rajasthan, and adjoining Pakistan. Another low-level cyclonic circulation lies over southwest Uttar Pradesh, and an east-west trough joins these two circulations, extending further across Bihar, Jharkhand, and Gangetic West Bengal.

This trough is running in proximity to Delhi, the weather agency said. The north to south oscillation of this trough will keep triggering pre-monsoon showers over the for the next five to six days, the agency said.

A fresh western disturbance is also likely to form over the northern mountains on Saturday. A combination of all these weather systems is likely to cause another round of rainfall, thundershowers, and dust storms, which will occasionally be accompanied by strong winds, over Delhi from Saturday to Thursday, the weather agency said. The intensity and spread of this pre-monsoon weather activity will peak on Tuesday and Wednesday. As such, heatwave conditions are unlikely over the city from Saturday to Thursday, the agency said.  End
