NEW DELHI – Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada has launched an artificial intelligence-based basmati paddy survey project for 2026-2028, the commerce ministry said Thursday. "It aims to support precise crop assessment, varietal identification, scientific advisory services and improved export planning," the release said.
The project, implemented by Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority in collaboration with the All India Rice Exporters Association, will cover nearly 4 million hectares and collect data from 150,000 ground-truth points to improve crop assessment and export planning.
Basmati rice exports from India were valued at $5.67 billion in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), with volumes reaching 6.5 million tonnes. "The sector continues to contribute significantly to India's agricultural exports, with a strong presence in markets across the Middle East, Europe and North America," the ministry said.
The commerce ministry also said that APEDA has signed a 70-year lease agreement with the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government to set up 'Basmati and Organic Training' centre in Pilibhit to support training and capacity building for basmati rice and organic farmers. It will "also serve as a resource centre for agricultural experts and students," the ministry said.
The facility, spread over seven acres, will be India's first dedicated demonstration farm for both conventional and organic basmati cultivation, the release said. "Owing to its location, the centre is expected to benefit farmers and stakeholders in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand," it also said.
At the event, Prasada pitched for expanding organic cultivation and called for greater farmer engagement. He suggested incorporating an artificial intelligence-based interactive museum at the centre to provide information and experiential learning for visitors and students, along with establishing a dedicated outlet for quality basmati seeds and organic inputs for farmers.
