NEW DELHI – A majority of the exit polls released Wednesday after the final phase of voting in the current round of assembly elections in four states and one Union territory projected a first-ever win for the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal and a third consecutive term in Assam. The polls also predicted the return of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led Secular Democratic Alliance in Tamil Nadu and a change of guard in favour of the Congress-led United Democratic Front in Kerala.

Pollsters like Matrize, Chanakya Strategies, P-Marq, and Poll Diary projected a narrow win for the BJP in West Bengal while Peoples Pulse and Janmat Polls predicted a clean sweep for the All India Trinamool Congress led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Matrize gave the BJP 146-161 seats in the 294-member assembly and 120-140 seats to the Trinamool Congress. P-Marq gave 150-175 seats to the challenger and 118-138 to the party ruling West Bengal for the past 15 years.

Peoples Pulse, on the other hand, gave 177-187 seats to Banerjee's party and 95-110 to the BJP. The majority mark in the state assembly is 148. Janmat Polls projected 195-205 seats for the regional party and 80-90 seats for the BJP.

In Assam, the exit polls, including by Axis My India and Matrize, predicted a sweep for the BJP led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The right-wing party is projected to win 80 of the 126 seats in the assembly. The Indian National Congress is projected to get 25-35 seats.

In Kerala, the Congress-led UDF may pip the ruling Left Democratic Front with 72 seats in the 140-member Assembly, as per a poll of polls. The LDF is projected to bag about 63 seats.

In Tamil Nadu, pollsters P-Marq, Matrize, and Peoples Pulse projected a majority for the DMK-led alliance with 122-132 seats, but with the rival All India Anna DMK not too far behind with 87-100 seats. Actor Vijay's party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam may secure 10-12 seats on its electoral debut. NDTV-Axis My India, however, projected the newbie winning 98-120 seats. In the neighbouring Union territory of Puducherry, the National Democratic Alliance is likely to retain power, as per the exit polls.

The results of the assembly elections that took place in three phases starting Apr. 9 will be declared Monday. End
