With 91.66% in phase 2, Bengal sees highest ever voter turnout

NEW DELHI – With a voter turnout of 91.66% as of 1945 IST in the second phase of the West Bengal assembly election Wednesday, the state has recorded its largest ever electoral participation, according to data from the Election Commission of India.
The voter turnout in the first phase for 152 seats was recorded at 93.19%. The total percentage over two phases now stands at 92.47%. The previous highest voter participation rate in the state was 84.72%, recorded in 2011.
Voting began at 0700 IST and closed at 1800 IST. A total of 142 assembly constituencies spread across seven districts voted in the second and final phase of the election. The All India Trinamool Congress led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is being challenged by the Bharatiya Janata Party, with the Indian National Congress and the Left front acting as marginal players. The results will be declared on Monday. End
