IMD issues red alert in parts of northeast India as heavy rain seen till Fri

MUMBAI – An east-west trough runs from the upper air cyclonic circulation over southeast Uttar Pradesh to Nagaland, which is likely to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till Monday, the India Meteorological Department said. The weather department has issued a red alert for heightened weather activity over these regions till Friday, which includes thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

 

Heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya till Monday, with a few spells of very heavy showers likely over the same regions during the period, the weather bureau said. Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till Tuesday, the bureau said. Light to moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected to continue in multiple parts of northeast Inida for the next five days.

 

An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Bangladesh, while a trough runs from northeast Madhya Pradesh to this circulation, the weather department said. These weather systems are likely to cause very heavy showers over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Thursday and Friday, the department said. Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Sunday, and over Gangetic West Bengal till Thursday, it said.

 

Hailstorms are expected over parts of Jharkhand on Thursday, the department said. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 km per hour and gusting up to 70 km per hour are expected over parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha till Thursday. A wet spell with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is expected over several parts of east India till Tuesday.

 

Currently, a western disturbance acting as a cyclonic circulation lies over north Pakistan and adjoining Kashmir, and an induced upper air cyclonic circulation lies over Punjab. An upper air cyclonic circulation also lies over southwest Rajasthan, while another upper air cyclonic circulation lies over southeast Uttar Pradesh. A north-south trough stretches from north Punjab to southwest Rajasthan, the weather bureau said. Under the influence of these weather systems, light to moderate rainfall or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over most parts of northwest India till Tuesday, the bureau said. It has warned of duststorms in parts of west Rajasthan from Saturday to Monday, the bureau said.

 

The trough running from northeast Madhya Pradesh to Bangladesh is expected to cause light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in the next five days, and over Vidarbha during the weekend, the weather bureau said.

 

The trough runs from north interior Karnataka to the Gulf of Mannar, and an anti-cyclonic circulation lies over interior Maharashtra and adjoining Telangana, the weather department said. These weather systems are expected to cause heavy rainfall over parts of Kerala till Saturday, over south interior Karnataka till Thursday, and over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from Thursday to Saturday, the department said. Hailstorms are also expected over parts of interior Karnataka till Thursday, the department said. A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over multiple parts of south peninsular India till Sunday.

 

Heatwave conditions are likely to persist over parts of west Rajasthan from Friday to Sunday, the weather bureau said. Hot and humid weather is expected over parts of Odisha till Friday, over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh till Sunday, and over coastal Karnataka till Thursday, the bureau said.  End
