NEW DELHI – The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued a notification late Tuesday proposing amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules to include higher ethanol blends such as E85 and E100, as well as biodiesel and hydrogen blended gas. The draft amendments aim to formally recognise these fuels within the regulatory framework to facilitate the adoption of these green fuels.

While E85 is 85% ethanol blended in petrol, E100 is pure ethanol used in flex-fuel vehicles. The ministry has also included E20 fuel under "gasoline", reflecting the push for nationwide dispensing of 20% ethanol blended petrol.

It has also included hydrogen-blended compressed natural gas, and B100 or pure biodiesel in the draft rules. Biodiesel is made from vegetable oils and animal fats. Earlier this month, the petroleum ministry also amended the Aviation Turbine Fuel (Regulation of Marketing) Order to facilitate the production and supply of bio-jet fuel or sustainable aviation fuel.

These biofuels emit less carbon than conventional fuels such as petrol and diesel. These blended fuels also help India reduce dependence on imported crude and natural gas. End
