MUMBAI – After rebounding sharply in the previous session, the domestic headline indices closed lower Tuesday as the price of Brent crude oil breached the $110 per-barrel level. On the day of expiry of the Nifty 50 weekly derivatives contract, the equity market remained volatile for most of the session. The delay in the US-Iran peace talks and the continued blockade of the Strait of Hormuz also weighed on sentiment.
The Nifty 50 settled at 23995.70 points, down 97 points or 0.4%, slipping below 24000 points after having clambered above the psychological mark Monday. The BSE Sensex closed at 76886.91, down 416.72 points or 0.5%. Most Nifty 50 constituents closed lower. However, investor nervousness was almost 2% lower with India VIX falling to 18.0475.
The broader market indices performed better than the benchmarks and ended marginally higher. The performance of the sectoral indices was mixed, with most of them closing lower. The sectoral indices for banking stocks tumbled. The Nifty PSU Bank was the worst performer, ending over 2% lower.
The fall in banking and financial services stocks weighed the Nifty 50 index down the most. Axis Bank, Shriram Finance, ICICI Bank, and State Bank of India were down 2–3%. Axis Bank was the key laggard among Nifty 50 stocks, ending nearly 3% lower. A rise in oil stocks, however, limited the fall in the Nifty 50, with the Nifty Oil & Gas index driving the pack of sectoral gainers.
In the 50-stock index, Maruti Suzuki India also tumbled after the company reported 7% year-on-year fall in net profit for the March quarter to INR 35.91 billion. The automaker's revenue from operations rose over 28% on year to INR 524.49 billion.
Shares of IFCI ended over 2% lower after the company reported a 94% year-on-year decline in consolidated net profit for the March quarter. It reported a consolidated net profit of INR 132.2 million on a revenue of INR 4.70 billion.
The Eternal stock came off the day's low at market closing after the company reported strong financial numbers for the March quarter. The food and grocery delivery company's shares ended nearly 1% lower. The company reported a rise of nearly 71% on quarter in its net profit to INR 1.74 billion. Its revenue from operations was up 6% on quarter at INR 172.92 billion.
Oil exploration companies logged the most gains among Nifty 50 constituents. Oil and Natural Gas Corp. was the top performer, ending over 5% higher. Reliance Industries was among the big gainers, rising nearly 2%. Coal India was the third Nifty 50 stock to rise in a big way, closing more than 3% higher. Monday, the company had reported an 11% year-on-year rise in consolidated net profit for the March quarter to INR 108.39 billion. Its consolidated top line rose 6% on year to INR 464.90 billion.
Piramal Finance ended 9% higher after hitting its 52-week high of INR 2,073.20 during the session. The stock rose after the non-banking finance company's consolidated net profit for the March quarter jumped nearly 5 times on year to INR 5.01 billion, including a one-time income of INR 13.26 billion from the sale of its imaging business.
Nifty 50 stocks that are part of the Nifty Metal index also rose. Adani Enterprises and Hindalco Industries ended 4% and 1% higher, respectively. The Nifty Metal sectoral index closed higher for the second session, up 0.5%.
