MUMBAI – Under the influence of two troughs running in the westerlies to the northeast of the country and an upper air cyclonic circulation lying over sub-Himalayan West Bengal, very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department said. Because of the presence of the two troughs, and an east-west trough running from north Haryana to Manipur, very heavy rainfall is also expected over parts of Arunachal Pradesh from Thursday to Saturday and over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till Wednesday, the weather department said.

These weather systems are also likely to cause heavy rainfall over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Sunday, over Gangetic West Bengal Wednesday and Thursday, and over Bihar Wednesday. Similar weather is likely over parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till Monday, and over Assam and Meghalaya till Sunday, the department said.

The weather bureau has issued an orange alert for parts of east India for heavy to very heavy rain till Thursday and over parts of northeast India till Saturday.

Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 km per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected over parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha till Thursday, the bureau said. Hailstorms are likely over parts of Jharkhand Thursday, it said. Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over several parts of eastern India in the next five days and over northeast India in the next seven days, the department said.

A western disturbance lies to the northwest of the country, and an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over west Uttar Pradesh, the weather department said. These weather systems are expected to cause light to moderate rainfall or snowfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in multiple parts of northwest India till Monday, it said. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 km per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are likely over parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh till Wednesday, while hailstorms are expected over parts of Himachal Pradesh Wednesday and over Uttarakhand till Wednesday.

The weather department has also warned of dust storms in parts of east Rajasthan till Wednesday and in west Rajasthan Wednesday.

An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over north Telangana while a trough runs from this weather system to the Comorin area. Under the influence of these systems, heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala from Thursday to Saturday and over south interior Karnataka Thursday and Friday, the weather bureau said. A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is likely over most parts of south peninsular India till Saturday, the bureau said. Hailstorms are also expected over parts of interior Karnataka till Wednesday.

Light to moderate showers with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in the next five days, and over Vidarbha till Friday, the weather department said.

Hot and humid weather is likely to persist in parts of Odisha, north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh till Saturday, the department said. Warm night conditions are likely in pockets of Rajasthan till Wednesday, the department said.  End
