India summer crop area 7.2 mln ha as of Friday, up 3% on year

MUMBAI – The area sown under summer crops across India rose 3% year-on-year to 7.2 million hectares as of Friday, according to agriculture ministry data. However, the area under rice, the largest summer crop, was 3.07 million hectares, down 5% from 3.23 million hectares a year ago.

 

The normal acreage during the summer crop season is 7.54 million hectares, as per the average of the area covered in the past two years. Summer crops are cultivated in India between the rabi and kharif seasons, typically from March to June.

 

The total area sown under pulses was 1.72 million hectares, up 7.9% from 1.59 million hectares a year ago. Moong acreage rose 1.4% to 1.32 million hectares from 1.30 million hectares. 

 

The area sown under coarse cereals rose 6.7% on year to 1.52 million hectares, the data showed. The acreage under maize, the leading summer coarse cereal in terms of area and production, rose 11.8% to 950,000 hectares from 850,000 hectares a year ago. The area under bajra was 510,000 hectares, down from 520,000 hectares at the same time last year.

 

The total area under oilseeds rose 19.5% on year to 921,000 hectares as of Friday, the data showed. The area under groundnut was up 31.2% on year at 551,000 hectares, and that under sesame was up 5.2% at 325,000 hectares.
