IMD issues orange alert for heavy rain in northeast, east India till Thu

MUMBAI – Under the influence of several weather systems, heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Bihar on Tuesday, over Gangetic West Bengal Wednesday and Thursday, over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Saturday, with a few spells of very heavy showers likely over some parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Thursday, the India Meteorological Department said. The weather department has issued an orange alert for heightened weather activities in some parts of east India till Thursday.
An orange alert is issued when rainfall exceeds 115.6 millimetres and goes up to 204.4 millimetres.
Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya till Saturday and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura till Friday, the weather department said. A few spells of very heavy rainfall are also likely over parts of Arunachal Pradesh from Thursday to Saturday and over Assam and Meghalaya till Thursday. The department has issued an orange alert for parts of northeast India till Thursday.
Currently, an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Uttar Pradesh and an east-west trough runs from this cyclonic circulation to northwest Bangladesh. An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Bangladesh, while another upper air cyclonic circulation lies over the central parts of Assam. A combination of these weather systems is also likely to cause light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over several parts of northeast India over the next five days and over east India in the next seven days, the weather bureau said.
Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are also likely over parts of northeast India till Tuesday and over parts of east India till Thursday, the weather bureau said. Hailstorms are expected over parts of Jharkhand on Thursday, the bureau said.
A western disturbance acting as a trough lies to the northwest of the country. This, along with the upper air cyclonic circulation lying over northwest Uttar Pradesh and another upper air cyclonic circulation lying over East Uttar Pradesh are likely to cause light to moderate rainfall or snowfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over multiple parts of northwest India till Sunday, the weather department said. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 km per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected over parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on Tuesday and Wednesday, the department said.
Hailstorms are likely over Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday and over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Tuesday and Wednesday, the weather bureau said, for which it has issued an orange alert.
A trough running from the central parts of Madhya Pradesh to the Comorin area is expected to cause heavy rainfall over parts of south interior Karnataka on Thursday, over Tamil Nadu, from Thursday to Saturday, and over Kerala from Wednesday to Friday, the weather department said. Hailstorms are likely over parts of north interior Karnataka from Tuesday to Thursday and over south interior Karnataka on Wednesday and Thursday, the department said. A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is likely over most parts of south peninsular India till Friday.
The presence of the trough running from Madhya Pradesh is also likely to cause light to moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh over the next five days, and over Vidarbha from Wednesday to Friday, the weather bureau said. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 km per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected over parts of Chhattisgarh from Wednesday to Friday.
Heatwave conditions are expected to persist over parts of Vidarbha, west Rajasthan, Odisha, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, and north Telangana till Tuesday, the weather department said. Hot and humid weather conditions are likely to prevail in pockets of Konkan and Kerala till Tuesday, over the coastal areas of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu till Wednesday, and in Odisha till Friday. Warm night conditions are expected in parts of west Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh till Tuesday, the department said. End
