NEW DELHI – Heatwave conditions are likely over northwest and central India over the next three days, which will likely abate thereafter, the India Meteorological Department said. Pockets of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and central India are likely to have heatwave conditions till Monday.

Warm night conditions are expected to continue in parts of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh till the weekend, and continue for longer over Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi till Monday, the weather department said. According to IMD, the highest maximum temperature of 45.2 degrees Celsius was reported in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj at 0830 IST Saturday.

Amid forecasts of high temperatures, the Agromet has advised farmers to provide light irrigation and maintain adequate moisture in standing crops. For wheat, farmers in Chhattisgarh were advised to complete harvesting and ensure safe storage, and to continue to need based irrigation in Himachal Pradesh.

Meanwhile, isolated heavy rainfall is forecast over Assam and Meghalaya during the weekend. From next week to the month-end, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over many northeast states such as Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.

Arunachal Pradesh is likely to receive isolated "heavy" rainfall till the weekend, which will likely intensify to "very heavy" rainfall from Monday till the beginning of next month, IMD said. "Ensure proper drainage in the fields of rice, maize, other standing crops, vegetables, and orchards," IMD said. It has also asked farmers to safely store the harvested crops such as paddy and potatoes in the state. End
