MUMBAI – The constituents of the Nifty Bank index are seen under selling pressure, as seen in the past three trading sessions, as high crude oil prices weigh on the rupee and raise chances of asset quality and credit growth deteriorating, analysts said. March quarter earnings of Nifty 50 company Axis Bank Ltd., and IDFC FIRST Bank Ltd., scheduled for Saturday, will be eyed after heavyweights ICICI Bank Ltd. and HDFC Bank Ltd.'s net profits beat estimates, analysts said.
This week, the Nifty Bank settled at 56089.75 points, down 0.80% on week. In comparison, the benchmark Nifty 50 fell 1.90% in the week. Several brokerages are positive on large private sector banks, but higher share of exposure to foreign exchange revenue of these banks is likely to weigh on their share prices if the rupee continues to fall against the dollar.
Other than currency exposure, elevated Brent crude oil prices will also affect banks' asset quality, analysts said. If Brent crude oil futures stay around $100 per barrel over a span of two or three quarters, banks' gross non-performing assets are likely to rise by 2%, an analyst at a consultancy firm said. While state-owned banks have lower exposure to currency risk, they have higher credit exposure to micro, small and medium enterprises, analysts said.
Focus will also be on deposit growth, as banks struggle to lure liabilities to match their strong growth in advances, analysts said. The impact of El Nino on rural credit will also be assessed nearing the end of the June quarter, they said.
"In the near term, Bank Nifty is likely to trade within a range of 55,800 to 57,000 levels. On the levels front, 55,800 is expected to act as immediate support, while 57,000 remains a key resistance zone for any upside move," Vatsal Bhuva, technical analyst at LKP Securities said in a note Friday.
