MUMBAI – The benchmark Nifty 50 index closed sharply lower Friday, ending the week with a fall of nearly 2%. The bears took over the domestic equity market for the third successive session with crude oil prices rising well over $100 a barrel. The unsettled geopolitical situation despite US President Donald Trump extending the ceasefire with Iran has resulted in the negative sentiment taking hold in the market. Information technology and financial services stocks were the major drags on the index.
The 50-stock index settled at 23897.95 points, down 1.1% or 275.10 points. The index closed below 24000 points for the second time in two weeks. The BSE Sensex closed at 76664.21, down 1.3% or 999.79 points. The 30-stock index was down 2.3% on week. The nervousness of investors rose considerably, with the India Volatility Index rising 6% to 19.7125.
"The sharp depreciation in the Indian rupee along with a steep rise in FII (foreign institutional investor) fund outflows and renewed appreciation in crude oil prices, also dented investor sentiment," Ankur Punj, managing director and business head at Equirus Wealth, said in a note.
The broader market indices reflected the sharp fall in the benchmarks, with all of them closing around 1% lower. All the sectoral indices ended in the red with the Nifty IT seeing the biggest fall. The index was down over 5%, falling for the third session in a row after rising for five weeks. Week on week, the Nifty IT was down more than 10%. Its constituents Infosys, Persistent Systems, and Coforge shed nearly 13% during the week. "Weak results and guidance by IT heavyweights have added to the negative momentum," Ruchit Jain, head of technical research at Motilal Oswal, said.
Infosys was the biggest laggard in the Nifty 50, down 7% on the day. It was followed by Tata Consultancy Services, Tech Mahindra, and HCL Technologies, which ended 4-5% lower.
HCL Technologies, which fell nearly 17% on week, was the biggest laggard in the period among Nifty IT constituents. Shares of LTM ended 5.5% lower after its earnings for the March quarter missed analysts' estimates for revenue and earnings before interest and tax margin. The stock was down for the third session, falling 10% in this period.
Financial services stocks SBI Life Insurance Co. and HDFC Life Insurance Co. also helped bring the Nifty 50 down. Both stocks ended 2-3% lower. SBI Life has fallen over 10% in the week. Among banking stocks, index heavyweight ICICI Bank settled nearly 2% lower on the day.
UTI Asset Management Co. ended nearly 11% lower. The company had released its March earnings after market hours Thursday. Its net profit fell nearly 73% on year and on quarter to its lowest in five years. The stock was the biggest laggard in the Nifty 500. Anant Raj and Firstsource Solutions were the other major laggards in the 500-stock index, ending 7-9% lower.
Coal India and Trent were the top gainers in the Nifty 50, up over 1?ch. Shares of Shriram Finance ended marginally higher despite the company reporting a nearly 41% year-on-year jump in net profit for the March quarter. The company posted a net profit of INR 30.14 billion on revenues of INR 125.09 billion. Its top line was up over 9% on year.
Himadri Speciality Chemical closed nearly 6% higher on the day as its consolidated net profit for the March quarter surged 29% on year to INR 2.01 billion. The company's revenue from operations rose nearly 14% on year to INR 12.88 billion. The stock was the top gainer among the Nifty 500 constituents. Schneider Electric Infrastructure and Cochin Shipyard were also major gainers in the Nifty 500, up nearly 5?ch.
Shares of IDBI Bank ended over 3% higher after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the government will go ahead with the divestment of its stake in the bank. The government aims to sell its 30.48% stake and Life Insurance Corp. of India's 30.24% stake in the bank.
