NEW DELHI – Voting for all 234 legislative Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu and for 152 of the 294 seats in West Bengal concluded Thursday with around 82.24% and 89.93% voter turnout, respectively, in the two states at 1700 IST, as per data shared by the Election Commission of India.

The final figures are likely to go slightly up as people still in the queue at the time of closure would be allowed to vote. The turnout figures for both the states are higher than the 2021 Assembly election, when Tamil Nadu saw 72.73% turnout and West Bengal 81.56% turnout. The cumulative figure for West Bengal, however, will change after the second phase numbers on Apr. 29.

While voting in Tamil Nadu was largely peaceful, a few disruptive incidents were reported from West Bengal. In Murshidabad, a scuffle broke out between Trinamool Congress workers and Aam Janata Unnayan Party founder Humayun Kabir, news agency ANI reported. Trinamool Congress members heckled Kabir and accused him of being a "Bharatiya Janata Party agent".

In Asansol, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul's car was reportedly attacked by a crowd. In Uttar Dinajpur district, the Trinamool alleged that three women were assaulted by Central Reserve Police Force personnel at a polling booth in Lakhipur ward, the Hindu reported. One of the women suffered a head injury, the newspaper quoted a local Trinamool leader as saying.

The BJP has thrown its resources and might into the battle for West Bengal where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is at the helm since 2011. Dozens of Union ministers and several chief ministers have been campaigning in the state for the BJP. The Election Commission of India has deployed around 240,000 Central Armed Police Forces personnel, armed with armoured vehicles and automatic weapons, for the first phase of elections in West Bengal.

In Tamil Nadu, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is eyeing a second consecutive term at power. The counting of votes will be done on May 4.  End
