NEW DELHI – US President Donald Trump Thursday said he had ordered the US Navy to "shoot and kill" with "no hesitation" any Iranian boat suspected of laying sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz. He added that he has also ordered the mine removal efforts in the region to be "tripled".

 

Trump again claimed US forces have already sunk "all 159" of Iran's naval ships and what is left is small boats. "I have ordered the United States Navy to shoot and kill any boat, small boats though they may be (their naval ships are all, 159 of them, at the bottom of the sea!), that is putting mines in the waters of the Strait of Hormuz," he wrote on social media. "There is to be no hesitation."

 

"Additionally, our mine sweepers are clearing the strait right now. I am hereby ordering that activity to continue, but at a tripled up level!" he added.

 

Iran says it has laid sea mines in the waters of the Strait of Hormuz to enforce a blockade of the narrow waterway through which a fifth of the world's energy passes. It has allowed selective passage through the strait. US forces in turn have enforced a naval blockade of Iran's ports. Despite the ceasefire between the warring parties, the blockades remain in place.  End
