MUMBAI – Pre-monsoon rainfall is expected to increase over many parts of the country next week, and is likely to spill over to the first week of May, according to private weather forecasting agency Skymet. Pre-monsoon peak rainfall has viable linkages with the arrival of the southwest monsoon, and based on past records, the onset of monsoon over the mainland occurs around 40 days after the pre-monsoon peak rainfall, which hints at a normal onset this year, it said.
The presence of multiple western disturbances is likely to keep up the spell of rainfall across the northern mountains from the last week of April, the weather agency said. An east-west trough is likely to form along the Indo-Gangetic plains from Punjab and north Rajasthan to Bihar and northwest Bengal on Sunday. This weather system will cause typical pre-monsoonal showers over north and east Indian states such as Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal till the end of April.
In northeast India, the presence of several weather systems is likely to cause widespread rain and thundershowers, embedded with scattered heavy rainfall from Apr. 26 to May 2, the weather agency said. An east-west trough lies over the Assam Valley, a cyclonic circulation lies over central Bangladesh, and an anticyclone lies over the northernmost parts of the Bay of Bengal.
The seasonal north-south peninsular Indian trough will oscillate east to west, bringing pre-monsoon showers over large sections of west and south India from Apr. 17 to May 2. Scattered thunderstorms, lightning, and showers will cover parts of Telangana and Maharashtra. Rainfall and thundershowers are also likely over Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Kerala and the interior of Tamil Nadu during the same period.
The arrival of southwest monsoon typically has a lead time of around 40 days after the occurrence of pre-monsoon peak rainfall, the agency said. As such, the 2026 southwest monsoon is likely to arrive on time, without any substantial delay, it said. The normal date for onset of monsoon is Jun. 1, beginning with Kerala and covering the entire country by Jul. 8. End
