MUMBAI – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. produced a record high 2.35 million automobiles in financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), up 12% on year, as demand for cars surged in the second half of the fiscal after a cut in goods and services tax. The Dzire, Fronx, Swift, Ertiga, and Baleno were the top five models produced in the previous financial year, the company said in a press release.
In September, the government simplified the goods and services tax system to a simple two-slab structure--5% and 18%. This brought down GST on small cars and commercial wheelers, thus, reducing prices and giving a boost to consumption.
The demand for cars in the second half of FY26 surged to the point where the company had to augment its production plans to cope with the shortage of production capacity. The company earlier this year fast-tracked plans to expand production capacity. Maruti Suzuki manufactures 17 automobile models, which are sold in India and overseas.
The company has an installed annual capacity of 2.40 million units and has four manufacturing facilities in India, including three in Haryana and one in Gujarat. Maruti Suzuki has identified a land in Gujarat's Khoraj Industrial Estate to set up its fifth production unit. "Once fully operational, this facility will have an annual production capacity of 10 lakh units," the company said.
For the December quarter, Maruti Suzuki had reported a net profit of INR 37.94 billion on a revenue of INR 498.92 billion. At 1122 IST, shares of the company traded a percent lower at INR 13,200 on the National Stock Exchange. End
