NEW DELHI – The Centre Wednesday approved Odisha government's proposal to procure five crops from farmers at minimum support price, with an outlay exceeding INR 14.28 billion. The state proposed to purchase pulses such as urad and moong as well as oilseeds like groundnut, mustard, and sunflower seeds, the agriculture ministry said in a release.
Of the total amount, INR 9.31 billion is earmarked to purchase 119,387 tonnes of urad, and INR 3.02 billion for 34,492 tonnes moong. Around INR 1.47 billion has been approved for purchase of 20,219 tonnes groundnut, INR 308 million for 4,964 tonnes mustard, and INR 170.6 million for 2,210 tonnes sunflower seed.
The Centre aims to boost the cultivation of sunflower seeds, particularly. "This crop was gradually disappearing from many areas; hence, its continuation and growth in Odisha is encouraging," Farm Minister Shivaraj Singh Chouhan said in the release.
According to the release, the entire procurement will be carried under PM-AASHA for a 90-day period. "Farmers should receive the benefits of minimum support price on time through a transparent system, so that actual producer farmers get direct relief," he added. End
